Code of Ethics - Parents or Guardian
Code of Ethics - Parents or Guardian
Purpose:
The purpose of this document is to highlight the contractual obligations including
the code of ethics for the parents/guardians. This conveys the rights of the school
management and expected conduct, behaviour and responsibility of all, parents/
guardian, while on school property, at school events and when interacting with staff
and students so that we can continue to flourish, progress and achieve our goals in an
atmosphere of mutual understanding for the benefit of your children and the school.
General requirements
We expect parents/guardian to have a fundamental understanding and commitment
to the following general propositions.
1. All students are expected to read, understand and follow rules and regulations
set out in Student’s Handbook 1 (SHB 1), Student’s Handbook 2 (SHB 2),
Student’s Record Book (SRB) at all times and parents/guardian must go through
same and to assist the children in carrying out same. Please read this entire book
together with your child, at least once during each academic year. The SRB is
issued as a hard copy and the SHB 1 and SHB 2 are issued as soft copies in the
Telegram Grade chat group for parents at the beginning of each academic year.
(The Pre Primary student receives the Pre Primary SRB and Grades 1 to 12
student receives the Grades 1 to 12 SRB, SHB 1 and SHB 2).
47
2. Any changes to the curriculum, exam board, school colours, school uniform,
school timing, venue of the school etc. will be at the total discretion of the
Management (Board of Governors and the School Management). Cooperate
with the school in all instances, keeping in mind that the school will always
make decisions looking at the students betterment in the future. Therefore
parents have to listen and understand the decisions taken by the school and have
to work together.
3. Send the child regularly to school maintaining punctuality and not to keep him/
her away from school except in case of illness, and in such instances send a letter
of explanation/medical certificate to the Class Teacher. Keep the child at home
if he/she is sick or suffering from an infectious disease until the contagious
period is completely over.
4. If your child is in Grade 1 and above, please see that he/she comes to school in
the correct uniform (The colours and other specifications have been conveyed
to you earlier, refer SHB 1). Make sure the child’s hair and other aspects of
grooming are according to the standards stipulated by school.
5. Children should be given a healthy breakfast before they come to school. Please
send only a snack for the interval and do not send excess amounts of food.
A snack can be also sent to be consumed during the register marking period.
Please note that the child is not allowed to go to the canteen and purchase food
during the register marking period.
6. See that the child leaves the school premises once school is over without
loitering in and around the school premises.
7. In the event your child is found to have breach school rules/ the code of conduct
for students, parents/guardian agree to pledge their indisputable support to the
school when corrective actions are given for same. The parents/guardian will
accept the decision of the Management (Board of Governors and the School
Management) pertaining to these outcomes as final and indisputable. All
corrective actions given to children are to assist them to be groomed to become
more responsible individuals.
8. Treat all members of the school community with respect. A school Prefect too
needs to be given due respect. If there is a conflict due to an oversight of a
staff member, remain calm and respectful. Approach school authorities to help
resolve issues in a civilized manner. Set a good example in your own speech,
conduct and behaviour.
9. Children from Grade 6 and above will earn red stars as well as black marks. The
Discipline Chart in the SRB contains the record of any red stars or black marks
your child has received along with the reasons.
10. We urge you, with utmost emphasis, not to allow children from Grades 7 and
above to attend parties, as such gatherings are known to be full of outsiders and
student can get exposed to alcohol, smoking and drugs etc. If discovered, the
corrective action will be very severe not only for the organisers, but for everyone
present in such gatherings. Inappropriate relationships, drugs, smoking, and
48
liquor problems all start at these types of events.
11. Seek to clarify both your child’s version of events and the school’s view in order
to bring about a peaceful solution to any issue. Ensure that your actions do not
bring the school into disrepute.
12. Correct your own child’s behaviour, especially when it could lead to a conflict.
13. Accept that the school has the authority to transfer the child to another branch of
Lyceum network (which happens as required, for disciplinary concerns) in the
event of his/her behaviour, hindering his/her progress as well as the progress of
other children, if the disciplinary measures taken remain unsuccessful. All dues
have to be paid and cleared before the transfer occurs.
14. Understand that the studentship of the child will be terminated if the Management
(Board of Governors and the School Management) of the school considers that
he/she is not fit to continue studies at Lyceum International School.
15. Do not discuss issues about another child or compare your child with others.
Issues concerning a particular child will be communicated exclusively to the
respective parents.
16. Exercise careful supervision of your child’s homework and studies. Daily set
aside a specific period of time in the evening to help children with their studies
(this is in the best interest of your child). Go through the work done by the
child every week and acknowledge the classwork and homework by signing the
respective books with your initials.
17. Refrain from putting our staff in uncomfortable situations by offering gifts in
cash or any other form. Instead, your child may offer a flower/card/a letter to
show gratitude (if necessary).
18. Refrain from sending cakes or gifts to other students on your child’s birthday.
19. If your child is in the Pre-Primary Grades (Leaf Schools) and is hyperactive,
destructive, a disturbance and harmful to the physical and mental well-being of
the other students, we regret that we will have to request you to stop sending
your child to school. Additionally, gaining admission into Grade 1 will not be
possible. Please note that entry into Pre-Primary (Leaf School) does not mean
that a vacancy is reserved for your child in Grade 1.
20. Please keep in mind that the certificates/leaving certificate, will be kept for only
one year after the child leaves the school.
21. Please properly discard old/used school uniforms at the end of the term/school
career, so that these items cannot be misused in a disrespectful manner.
22. Enjoy at least one meal with your child, preferably dinner.
23. Parents/guardian should not be in contact (in any form) with other students of
the school who is not their own child/ward.
24. Parents/guardian should not use their child/ward to collect information on other
students of the school in any way.
49

to the school authorities whenever required.
5. Please be advised that the SRB (issued for free to every student annually) has
two functions;
• To act as an identification document of the student.
• To provide a medium of communication between the school and the parents/
guardian.
6. If communication has to be made by a parent/guardian to school, you may make
a note in the ‘Notes from Parents to School’ section. Please acknowledge the
notices we send you with the same signature you have placed as the specimen
on page 4 and/or 5 of the SRB. You can also send a message in your respective
parents services telegram telephone number.
7. Parents/guardian must complete all relevant pages of the SRB (especially the
particulars of the student/parent and guardian contact details, student’s medical
details, growth chart, annual check-up, confirmation of term fees, parents’/
guardian’s acknowledgements - refer to the content page) and ensure that a
recent (taken not more than 6 months ago) passport-sized colour photograph of
the student (in school uniform for the Grade 1 - 12 SRB) is pasted on the cover
page from the first day of school. Additionally, please cover the SRBs with a
transparent cover.
8. The loss of an SRB is a serious matter, it must be reported to the Class Teacher,
within the same day or the very next working day in writing with the full details
on how the loss occurred, along with the parent’s/guardian’s signature. In
addition to any disciplinary action deemed necessary, the parents/guardian of
the student will be liable for the cost of replacement which is Rs. 1000/- (subject
to change).
9. Refrain from having personal discussions with teachers and requesting their
personal contact numbers. Always use official channels instead, such as the
school’s parent services number via sms/landline/your child’s SRB to contact
school. For any concerns you may have regarding your child, you may go
through the appropriate channels by writing/speaking to the Class Teacher/
School Management (Deputy Coordinating Principal/Director/Principal/Deputy
Principal/Warden/Headmaster/Headmistress/Sectional Heads), so that they can
be dealt with, appropriately and effectively for all concerned.
50
10. In case of any malpractices, please write/e mail the Principal.
11. Take part in your child’s school meetings, religious and other events proactively
and productively. Contribute constructively where necessary. Understand that
your attendance at meetings is compulsory.
12. The School publishes a Newsletter on a monthly (or bi-monthly) basis. Parents
are requested to carefully read the Newsletter. Students with the appropriate
reading ability should also read the Newsletter. If the student is unable to read,
the sections relevant to them should be read out to them. The Newsletter is
posted in the Lyceum web page (www.lyceum.lk) as well as in the Telegram
Grade chat group for parents.
13. Maintain a separate file where all notices sent by the school via SRB/Telegram
grade chat group for parents.
14. When the parents/guardian are requested to come to school and meet the
Principal or any other authorized person for any matter, parents/guardian should
act in fullest co-operation and meet the relevant person without delay.
15. Parents/guardian should regularly check the Discipline Chart in the SRB, and
if any note has been made, advise and support the child to improve his/her
behaviour accordingly.

venues during the day-to-day school activities as well as other school events
including concerts.
2. Refrain from forming parents’ committees, publicly criticizing the school,
making defamatory or offensive comments regarding the school or any of the
students/parents/staff of the school on Facebook or any other social media
sites. Any issue or grievance can be officially conveyed to the school Principal/
Headmistress (Leaf School) on the ‘open day’ or via the school parent services
number via sms and solve in a friendly atmosphere.
53
3. The Management (Board of Governors and the School Management) of the
school considers the use of social media to campaigns and complaints against
the school as unacceptable and not in the best interest of the children or the
school community. Management encourages constructive criticism through
direct approach and wish to inform that Lyceum International Schools developed
exponentially during past years due to serious consideration of constructive
criticism and suggestions of parents. Management values all learned lessons
through past experiences.
4. Always keep in mind that not only the reputation of the school itself but more
importantly, your child’s future will depend on the school. Therefore, tarnishing
