LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET NO. 5

DETERMINING THE CONDITIONS UNDER WHICH LINES AND SEGMENTS ARE
PARALLEL OR PERPENDICULAR

Name of the Learner: ___________________________________ Section: ______________

School: _________________________________________________ Date: _________________

I. Learning Competency:
1The learner will be able to:
a. illustrate and generate the properties about alternate interior angles
formed by parallel (M8GE-IVd-1)
b. determine the conditions under which lines and segments are parallel
and perpendicular (M8GE-IVe-1)

II. Instructions: Your goal in this section is to learn and understand key concept
on measurement of angles formed by a parallel line cut by a transversal and
basic concept on perpendicularity and properties of a parallelogram and learn
the key concept on determining if the given lines are parallel or perpendicular.
Towards the end of this section, you will be encouraged to learn different ways
of proving deductively… you can also watch videos on YouTube about this topic.

III. Activities:
Day 1
Activity 1. UNCOVERING THE MYSTERY!
Uncovering the mystery of parallel lines cut by a transversal. Study
the problem situation below and answer the succeeding questions.

A zip line is a very strong cable between two points with a pulley
attached to it. This could be used as a means of transportation. The zip line
in the figure goes from a 20-foot tall tower to a 15-foot tower 150 meters
apart in a slightly inclined ground as shown in the sketch. (Note: Tension of
the rope is excluded.)

1. What kind of angle pairs are ∠M and ∠A? ∠ MHT and ∠ ATH ?

2. In the figure above, what are the measures of the four angles?
(Show your solutions)
a. m∠ M = ____________
b. m∠ A = ____________
c. m∠ MHT = ___________
d. m∠ ATH = ___________

3. Are the two towers parallel? Why do you say so?

4. Is the zip line parallel to the ground? Why do you say so?

Day 2
Activity 2. AM I PERPENDICULAR? LET’S FIND OUT!
Given any two distinct lines on a plane, the lines intersect, then they
form four angles. Consider the figures below to answer the questions that
follow.

Questions:
1. What is common in the four figures given above?

2. What makes figure 3 and 4 different from the first two figures?

3. Which among the four figures show perpendicularity? Check by using your
protractor.

4. When are lines said to be perpendicular to each other?

5. How useful is the knowledge on perpendicularity in real life? Cite an example

in which perpendicularity is important in real life?

Day 3

Activity 3. THINK TWICE and PASTE!

Part I: Refer to the given figure and the given conditions in answering
the succeeding questions. If yes, justify your answer through a deductive
way of proving (you can use a paragraph form of logical statement or a two-
column proof with STATEMENT and PROOF.
Given: S

MI ≅ IL
SE ≅ EL E

m∠ SEI =90 °
M L
I
1. Is ML ⊥ IS?

2. Is MS ⊥ SL?

3. Is SL ⊥ ML?

4. Are ∠MSI and ∠ISL complementary angles?

5. Are ∠MIS and ∠SIE complementary angles?

6. Is IE a perpendicular bisector of SL?

7. Do ∠MIS and ∠SIL form a linear pair?

8. Is the m∠MIS = 90° ?

5. Perpendicularity matter in real life especially building a house.. the
mason should measure the angle that the post is perpendicular to
the gravity for strong foundation

Activity 3. THINK TWICE AND PASTE
