SEM115 - Literary Criticism SEPT 09, 2023

Literature is referring to compositions that tell stories, dramatize situations, express emotions,
and analyze and advocate ideas.
-you really have to know the classic writer.
Benefits of Literature (why we need to teach and study about Literature)
 It helps us grow, both personally and intellectually (you know how to treat people)
 It exercises our emotions (literature is companion, through sharing their emotions,
tension, assist to express their emotions)
 It is one of the shaping influences of life (makes us human, we get to identify the
significant human experience. You start to question things)
Literature Allow Us to Be Open, To Listen, And To Be Curious – Tracy K. Smith

Types of Literature : Genres

1. Prose Fiction – it includes myths, parables, romances
2. Poetry- It expresses a monologue, or a conversation grounded in the most deeply felt
experiences of human beings. (poetry can be informal or formal)
3. Drama- It is literature designed to be performed by actors for the benefit and delight of an
audience.

historical and biographical works, and the like. (more concern in factual)

Reading Literature and Responding to It Actively

Our first readings do not provide us with full understanding.

My best example for this are poems. In poems sometimes or most of the time we cannot just
comprehend the meaning behind the words in the poem. We tend to read it once again or maybe
twice or trice to understand its full meaning. We also need to himay himayin every piece of
words and stich those words together to fully understand it.

Strategies for Reading

 Predict
 Visualize – you visualize the characters to help you understand fully the story. You need
to dig deeper.
 Connect – what you read about you connect yourself about.
 Question – full understand is there when you start to raise a question.
 Clarity – expect to have understanding change when you already red the full story.
 Evaluate – develop your own idea , think of it as a whole

I. Literary Discussion
-Literary discussion affords students an opportunity to think critically about text and to
reflect as they read, discuss, and respond to books and other reading materials
II. Literary Analysis
- It described the author’s use of certain elements
III. Literary Interpretation
- It is determining the story’s value and meaning. You are considering both the text’s
meaning and its significance. (you still in the book starting to relating in your life)

Individual Assync

From your list of reasons, set out goals for yourself in teaching literature in the language
classroom. Instead of writing sentences, translate your goals into graphic symbols. You
may use pictures from the internet or personal ones. Make your visual interesting and
colorful.
