Activity 2.

Simulation in
RobotExpert (part one)
Activity 2. Simulation in RobotExpert (part one)

Description

The student will work with basic simulation elements in RobotExpert.

Objectives

To learn the basic elements to work in the RobotExpert environment.

Instructions

Before loading the sample cell, the library root must be set, following these steps:

Step 1. Open the menu “file” and select the “options” dialog, and then the “library” tab.

Note: the library root contains 3D data and additional information associated with the library
components and robotic cells.

Step 2. Open the dialog and select the “library” tab.

Step 3. In the “library” tab, check that the “ArcWeld_Example-Library” has been selected.

Step 4. Then, open the “file” menu and select the “cell” dialog and open a new project with “open.”

Step 5. To load a prior project: “ArcWeld_Example.cell.”

Step 6. To run an operation and test the simulation, select the element in the project tree.

Step 7. After this is done, the following work environment will open.
Step 8. Then, the following results will be open, shown with arrows. This “sequence editor” allows
editing and show the operations performed in the process in bold.

Step 9. By default, only seam operations are displayed, and via locations are hidden. Use the
tree filters to display the via locations, as shown in the following figure.
Step 10. Select via locations.

Step 11. Locations are displayed in the following figure.

Step 12. Press “play” to run the simulation.

Step 13. When running the simulation, a red line indicates the current simulation time.

You may pause the simulation, take the red line as a ruler, and rewind or move forward the
process to continue the simulation from that point.

Step 14. You may also control the simulation speed by changing the time interval, as shown in
the bar in the following figure.

Step 15. Unselect the process-related box and observe how the arrows showing element
orientation are hidden.
Step 16. Add a new operation to the editor path selecting the “path editor” tab.

Step 17. You may customize the editor columns by clicking the icon shown in the following figure.

Step 18. Remove all elements from the right side, and from the “general” option, add “attachment”
and “OLP commands,” from the “default” option, select “config,” “motion type,” “speed,” “zone,”
and “work rool,” and from the “OLP dynamic params” option, select “Ext1” and “Ext2”.
Step 19. After adding the commands mentioned above, the columns will be set as follows. As
shown in the figure, it is also possible to change the order, for instance, moving the first label to
the end.

Step 20. We have a new configuration and order of properties to see.

Step 21. With this configuration, the simulation resets and the cycle run again, and we can see
that each main step appears in bold letters.
Step 22. You may select any of the process steps, and by right-clicking you may make the robot
jump straight to that point.

Step 23. You may also move to the step where you want the robot to continue.
With this, we start an exploration of the commands to be used during a simulation (Siemens
Software, 2015).

These screenshots were obtained directly from the software being explained on the computer, for educational
purposes.

For evaluation

Write a report where you perform the steps explained above with the “ArcWeld_Example.cell”
test project.

Turn in the document in Word format, good spelling, clear idea development. 10%

Deliverable

Document in Word format with the report of the simulation performed by the student (pictures and narration of
executed steps), as well as their conclusions on the advantages of robot simulation, prior to their actual in-site
implementation.
