Science,

Technology, and
Nation-building

Roselle Jean G. Licong

• Discuss the role of science and technology in
Philippine nation building

• Evaluate government policies in terms of their

Objectives: contribution to nation building

• Evaluate S&T policies of the government and

appraise their impact on the development of
the Filipino nation.
SECTION 1

Development of
Science and
Technology in the
Pre-colonial Period of
the Philippines
Pre-colonial Period

ü Early Filipino settlers were already using

certain plants and herbs as medicines.
ü implementation of systems of farming and
animal-raising
ü developed modes of transportation
(terrestrial or maritime)
ü making of rice terraces (engineering feat)
SECTION 2

Development of
Science and
Technology in the
Colonial Period of the
Philippines
Colonial Period

ü Walls, roads, bridges, and other large

infrastructures were built.
ü Spanish government developed health and
education systems (enjoyed by principalia
class).
bridges, roads, and especially Intramuros
Colonial Period

ü American occupation established a

government agency, the Bureau of Science
(to nurture Science and Technology)
Bureau of Science and Insular Laboratory
SECTION 3

Development of
Science and
Technology in the
Post-colonial Period
of the Philippines
Post-colonial Period

ü Establishment of PAGASA, NAST, and

reconstituted National Science and
Technology Authority (now Department of
Science and Technology)

Role of Science
and Technology
in Philippine
Nation-Building
Nation-building is a process with the end
goal of establishing common interests, goals,
and preferences among citizens of a country
towards the formation of that country where
the people have no intention of separating
themselves from one another.
• Major contributions of Science and Technology to
Philippine nation-building are linked to its socio-
economic progress and its industrialization.

• Through science and technology, we may gain a

better knowledge of society issues and become
competent decision-makers who can develop and
execute solutions. Only then would Filipinos be
able to grasp the concept of "matatag,
maginhawa, at panatag na buhay."
The primary purpose of science
and technology in Philippine
national construction is to
improve people's quality of
life.

Selected
Indigenous
Science and
Technologies
Indigenous Science
• a product of indigenous knowledge perfected by
people through life experiences.

Indigenous Technology
• are processes or products resulted from
studying indigenous science.
• is designed and fabricated based on the culture,
tradition, and needs of a people and which is
adopted for use in the environment of those

guava, to name a few) to prevent and treat
certain diseases.
Herbal Medicine and Traditional Health Practices

• hilot to treat sprains and fractures

• tawas to determine the cause and
nature of sudden illnesses through the
use of potassium alum
Food Preservation

• Drying and smoking are one of the

most ancient methods of food
preservation.

• It works because it removes much of

the food's water and therefore prevent
microbial activity as we all know now.
Classifying Soils

• One of the indigenous practices of early

Filipinos is classifying soils for planting.

• Criteria used by early Filipino farmers in

soil classification are their experiences
supported by their ability to observe
attributes of soil resource.
