Land Preparation and Fertilizer Application Manual

Land must be prepared properly before planting. This involves clearing weeds, incorporating green manure or compost, and tilling the soil at the right moisture level. Tilling is done using plows and harrows pulled by tractors, cows, or carabaos. Fertilizers like compost, manure, and EMAS are applied and mixed into the soil. Raised beds may be constructed for some crops, especially during rainy seasons, but are not always necessary. Proper land preparation and fertilization helps ensure good soil drainage, fertility, sunlight, and air circulation for optimal plant growth.

Land Preparation and Fertilizer Application

Materials

Bolo or grass cutter for land clearing Rake

Cow or carabao for tilling of land Plow and harrow
Bokashi and/or Animal manure EMAS
Green manure and/or compost Asarol and bareta/taktak

1. Before clearing an area to be identified as your new garden or farm, we must consider the
following considerations:
a. Source of water supply
b. Good soil drainage
c. Soil Fertility
d. Sunlight availability
e. and Good air circulation
2. Clear the area where you want to put your garden or farm using grass cutter for small and soft
kind of weeds; using bolo or itak for hard weeds or small trees. Dig the roots of big plants and
trees using asarol and bareta/taktak.
3. During clearing time, if weeds are in their flowering or seeding stage, you should gather and the
dispose the weeds away from your farm land (para yung mga buto ng weeds ay hindi kumalat sa
farm at tumubo ulit doon) but if most of the weeds are in their seedling to vegetative stage (no
flowers and seeds yet), you can let it scattered in the field as green manure or compost.
4. Let the small weeds especially those belong in legumes family (because legumes are rich in
Nitrogen) decomposed or even incorporate even fresh in the land during cultivation. With the
aid of rake, gather and removed all big and woody plant in the farm lot that may get in the way
during cultivation and land preparation.
5. Do not till the soil when it’s too wet or too dry. When the soil is till when its too wet or sticky,
the soil structure is damage and when it’s too dry, it’s very hard to cultivate or required more
horse power and ware on the plow. The best way is when the soil is damp but not sticky.
6. Mechanically cultivate the land using tractor or cow/carabao with a plow implement. Apply
compost and/or animal manure and plow it again. Change its implement with harrow to
pulverize and level the soil.
7. Making raise bed or plot is not always necessary, it depend on plant you are going grow and the
season (summer and rainy season). For leafy vegetables like mustard, pechay and lettuce, it is
advisable to make raised bed 1 meter wide and 10 meter long both during rainy and summer
months. For plants like corn, sweet potato, okra, eggplant it’s not necessary to make raised bed
during summer months but it’s better to make beds during rainy season.
