Definition of Science: There are three definitions of science.
Science as a body of knowledge: It is a process of acquiring knowledge to get a better
understanding through observation or thinking. The body of knowledge generally regarded as
science include: chemistry, biology, physics, mathematics and microbiology.
Science as a medium of acquiring knowledge: It is a process of acquiring information and
getting the exact understanding based on observations and experimentation.
Science as an institution: It is the study and development of human knowledge in various
research and educational institution.
Branch of Science.
There are two ways of grouping scientific discipline or body of knowledge.
1: Formal Science: Science is said to be formal if its content, argument and producer obey
certain roles. The formal science include; mathematics ( which comprises geometry, algebra,
trigonometry, arithmetic), logic, theoretical physics and statistics.
The mnemonic device rule is BODMAS.
B stands for bracket. The symbol is ( ).
O stands for of. The symbol is still “of”.
D stands for division. The symbol is /.
M stands for multiplication. The symbol is “×”.
A stands for addition. The symbol is “+”.
S stands for subtraction. The symbol is “ – ”.
2: Empirical science: These study object and phenomena which can be observed and also be
tested with instruments.
