I. INTRODUCTION

With the onset of modern technology in the recent time, computers and the
internet have made its respective place as an effective tool towards literacy and
productivity. Coupled with the demanding tasks and continuous evolution of information
in this fast-paced world, it has significantly made people’s lives easier and comfortable.
These technologies have re-shaped how the 21 st century learners consume,
create and share information. With just a click of a button, information can now be
downloaded or uploaded in a matter of minutes or seconds. Learners now utilize such
advantage for a variety of academic or entertainment purposes.

1
As facilitator of learning, the teacher has the responsibility to help learners
understand the knowledge they need about the safe and responsible use of ICT
especially with the popularity of wikis, blog and video conferencing tools.
These lessons aim to develop the knowledge, values, skills and interest of the
learners to be a responsible wiki user or manager.

II. OBJECTIVES

Guided by the teacher, the learner is expected to:

a. define wikis;
b. cite examples of popularly used wikis;
c. enumerate the steps in using wikis;
d. discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using wikis; and
e. post and share materials in wikis in a safe and responsible manner.

III. PRE-TEST

Ask the learners to use a separate sheet for their answers.

IV. PROCESS AND DELIVERY

Lesson 1 –Defining Wikis and Citing Its Popular Examples

Know
1. Guided by the clues or descriptions, have the learners arrange the jumbled
letters to form the correct word. (This may be done individually or by
grouping the class accordingly.)

EWBSEIT - It is a set of web pages that belong to each other

as one group.
LCAOLBROAITEV - It means being done by working jointly and
willingly with another person.
YANNOE - It means any person.
ERSVIE - It means to edit, modify or update.
IWKIPEDAI - It is a popular free on-line encyclopedia.

2. Let the learners answer the following questions while viewing the video clips
about wikis.

Wikis in Plain English https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-dnL00TdmLY

What is Wiki? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5HijgcZ0bc

a. What is a “wiki”?
b. What are its characteristics?
c. What software is used to run wikis?
d. What are the important buttons in wikis?
e. Who invented wikis?
f. What is the origin of the term wiki?

3. You may present the following concepts via Multi-media presentation or

strips of cartolina.

Wiki – It is a website that is collaborative in nature. It allows any user to

participate in revising or updating content together with the other authors of
an article in that website.

Wiki Engine – It is the software that

a wiki uses. It is also called a “wiki
application.”

Ward Cunningham – He is the

inventor or the father of wikis. He
introduced this in 1995.

*The term Wiki wiki Web
that came from the
Hawaiian word “Wiki wiki”
which means fast or swift.

*A computer, an internet
connection and a web
browser are used to
modify the article or part
of the article in a wiki.
The revision done by the
user may depend upon the set restrictions of the group.

*Wikis are used for a variety of purposes. If you make a mistake, it is easy to
revert or go back to an earlier version of the document since wikis are
capable of saving all the revisions it has undergone.

Examples of Wikis

a. Wikipedia – It is the most popular and most used wiki. It is practically a

free on-line version of an encyclopedia. You may locate this website by
logging into: http://www.wikipedia.org

b. Library Blog Wiki – This wiki focuses on the use of wikis and blogs.
These are used in Australian Libraries.

c. Charles Sturt Library Wiki – It is used by the students and staff of

Charles Sturt Library.

d. Tolkien Wiki – This wiki is exclusive for the readers of the novels of JRR
Tolkien. This can be accessed at:
http://www.thetolkienwiki.org/wiki.cgi

Process
1. a. Classroom-Based Activity
Have the learners work in dyads. If the ICT Lab with internet connection
is available, let them search and visit Wikipedia.com. Ask them to
navigate the site, examine its appearance or environment and identify its
parts. Afterwards, call on volunteers to share their findings to the class.

b. If the ICT Lab with internet connection is not available, you may print a
poster-sized version of Wikipedia.com and follow the same procedure -
examine its appearance or environment and identify its parts, then share
the findings to the class.

2. Classroom-Based Activity
Group the learners accordingly. Each group will navigate through their
assigned websites and study its environment, parts, content and its similarity
difference from Wikipedia. The output will be graded using the Rubric that
the teacher and the class have agreed upon.

GROUP 2 – Wikiquote GROUP 4 – Wikinews

Reflect and Understand

Have the learners answer the following questions scholarly.

1. In what way/s do wikis help you as a 21 st century learner?

2. What topics will you cover if ever that you are to manage your own wikis?
Support your answer.

Transfer
Paper and Pencil Test
Have the learners accomplish the Concept Map about Wikis.

5
Home Activity on Wikis
Learners will interview three people about their knowledge on Wikis (with
proper documentation). Have them ask the following:

a. Are you familiar with wikis? What is your idea about them?
b. What wikis are you recently using? Have been using?
c. Do you recommend using wikis among students? Why?

Have them write the responses in their notebooks.

Lesson 2 –Explaining the Advantages and Disadvantages of Wikis

GROUP 2 – Debate GROUP 4 – Talkshow

Reflect and Understand

There is divided opinion and a healthy debate among educators

concerning the quality of content developed in a wiki environment. In your
opinion, is there a big difference in terms of the quality of content when
comparing open and closed authoring approaches (For example, Wikipedia-open
authored and Encyclopaedia Britannica-open authored)?

Lesson 4 –Posting and Sharing on Wikis

Know
You may present the following concepts via multi-media presentation or
strips of cartolina.

*Wikis are accessed by everybody across the globe. These

audience/contributors of such websites come from different walks of life,
professions, as well as varied cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. So, it is
a moral obligation to observe proper etiquette and acceptable social behaviour
whenever one posts on a wiki.

Take note of the following.

1. Be truthful in your content. Write only what is based on facts.

2. Be careful in choosing words that are offensive in general.
3. Refrain from attacking people. Respect people, no matter what they do or
they say.
4. Plan the content of your wiki. Cite reliable sources if you are editing an article
of another author.

9
5. Give credit where credit is due. Cite people who acted as resource persons in
wiki content.

Process
Classroom-Based Activity
Group the learners accordingly. Have the groups create a commercial
emphasizing the safe and responsible use of wikis (posting and sharing). The
video must have a playtime of atleast 30 seconds but will not exceed 90
seconds. Ask the learners to use a video editing software (MovieMaker) to make
the commercial interesting and attractive.

Let the learners upload their work in a social media platform (Facebook,
Youtube, etc.) and tag their friends.

The output will be graded using the Rubric that the teacher and the class
have agreed upon.

Reflect and Understand

Answer the question scholarly.

As a 21st century learner, how would you practice the safe and
responsible use of wikis (posting and sharing)?

Transfer
1. Cite one content of a wiki copied from any type of wiki.
2. Edit, add, revise, delete or update some parts of the content. Cite the
resources that served as your basis for your revision or update. Submit the
original work together with your revised content to your teacher.
3. The output will be graded using the Rubric that the teacher and the class
have agreed upon.

Day 5 – Quiz
