Integration

The daily lesson plan discusses teaching integration to students. The learning objectives are for students to understand indefinite integrals and determining integrals of various functions. Activities include showing students how to determine integrals by reversing differentiation and introducing integration symbols. Students are given examples of integrating functions like axn and asked to find integrals of other functions. The lesson also covers finding constants of integration, determining equations of curves from functions, and calculating definite integrals of algebraic expressions.

 Of axn, where a is a constant and n is a n integer,
Activities :

• The students are shown how the integrals are determine by reversing differentiation

Differentiation

Integration
• Teacher introduced the symbol for integration.
- read as ‘integration of y with respect to x’
• The students are shown how the integrals are determine by using the formula

and the basic techniques of integration are:

• A few example of integrand functions are given and student are asked to find their integral.

and b are constants, n is an integer and

Activities :
• Teacher asks student to form a group of three and distribute Handout 1.
• Student discuss the handout while the teacher guides the student their group(where necessary).
• Teacher discusses the solution of question 1 with the students.
• Teacher guides the students untill they can see the relatioship and derive a formula to integrate
expressions in the form of (ax + b)n(question 2).

The formula is:

• Teacher emphasizes the expression in the bracket must only a linear equation to imply the
formula.
• Teacher writes down 2 questions on the whiteboard for them to solve individually.
• Teacher asks 2 students on how they get the answers.
• Students do some exercise.

Learning Objectives : Understand and use the concept of indefinite integral

Learning Outcomes : Students will be able to:

 Find constants of integration, c, in indefinite integrals.
 Determine equation of curves from functions of gradient.

Activities :
• Teacher asks students on how to find c and teacher responds to the student’s answer.
(Constant ,c, can be determine by substituting corresponding values of both x and y.

• Teacher explains on how to determine the equation of the curve from gradient of functions.

• If a gradient functions, , the equation of the curve is ,

(substituting corresponding values of both x and y to find c).
• A few example are given and student are asked to find their equation of the curve
• Students do some exercise.

 Find definite integrals of algebraic expression

Activities :

• Teacher elicits prior knowledge involving the integrals of ax n and (ax + b)n.
• Teacher explains on how to find definite integrals of algebraic expression

- for x = a to x = b is written by

- = F(b) – F(a): a = lower limit, b = upper limit

• Teacher gives an examples where this formula can be applied

• Teacher asks student to work in pairs.
