Work Energy Power 1 G10 2022

Work is defined as the product of the applied force and the distance moved in the direction of the force. The SI unit for work is the joule (J). Kinetic energy is the energy possessed by an object due to its motion and depends on the object's mass and speed. Potential energy is stored energy due to an object's position or state, such as gravitational potential energy which depends on an object's mass and height. Work, kinetic energy, and potential energy are all measured in joules.

Chapter: Work, Energy and Power

Work

Work is defined as the product of force applied and distance moved in the direction of the force.

Work done = Force x distance

WD = Fxd

Hence a possible unit for work is Nm.

The SI unit is the joule (J), in honor of the scientist James Joule.

1J = 1 Nm

If you rub your hands together, work is said to be done against friction and heat energy is
obtained.

If you try to push a wall, no work is done if the wall does not move.

Q. A block is pushed horizontally with a force of 5N and covers a horizontal distance of 3m.
Calculate the work that has been done.

Q. A block is pushed horizontally with a force of 5N and covers a horizontal distance of 3m. It
encounters a constant frictional force of 2 N

Calculate

(i) the work done by the 5N force

(ii) the work done against friction

(iii) the net work done

Suggest what becomes of the net work done

Q. Someone is holding a bag.

Is work being done? Why?

Energy

It is the ability to do work.

Its SI unit is the joule (J).

It exists in many different forms such as:

Kinetic energy (Ek)

It is the energy possessed by a body due to its motion.

It exists in two main forms:

(i) Translational kinetic energy

(ii) Rotational kinetic energy

Formula for translational kinetic energy

speed v

mass m

1
𝐸𝐸𝑘𝑘 = 𝑚𝑚𝑣𝑣 2
2
m: mass in kg

v: speed in m/s

Ek: kinetic energy in J

Q. Find the amount of kinetic energy possessed by the following bodies:

(i) an athlete of mass 80kg running at a speed of 10m/s

(ii) a bullet of mass 50g moving at a speed of 200m/s

(iii) a car of mass 1000kg moving at a speed of 25m/s

Q. A cyclist of mass 60kg accelerates from a speed of 10m/s to a speed of 15m/s. Find the
increase in his kinetic energy.

Potential energy

It is the energy possessed by a body due to its position or its state. It is a form of energy that can
be stored.

There are three main forms of potential energy

(i) gravitational potential energy

(ii) elastic potential energy

(iii) electric potential energy

Gravitational potential energy (Ep)

It the energy possessed by a mass due to its height above the ground.

Formula for gravitational potential energy

Take a mass and raise it vertically upwards. On doing so, work is being done against gravity. The
work done becomes gravitational potential energy.

work done against gravity =

Ep = mgh

m: mass in kg

g: acceleration due to gravity.

h: height above ground level(m)

Ep: Gravitational potential energy in joule (J)

height of 8m above the ground.

Q. A girl of mass 30kg runs up a flight of stairs consisting of 20 steps each of vertical height
18cm. Find her gain in gravitational potential energy.
