(Traditional (From time to time via WhatsApp and google
Classroom,distance classroom students may be provided with various
learning,blended or other) types material of (videos,articles and web pages
etc.)

Course Description This is an introductory course comprising of basic


legal vocabulary related to various branches of
law.Students would be given lists of certain words
and description of some concepts along with
samples of relevant texts (in various forms such as
law books,statutes,cases and articles).

The course also gives students the ability to


understand the importance of use of legal English
in written and oral communication.They would be
given initial essential skills required in the legal
field be it a court room or other professional legal
environment at national or international level. The
skill of how to analyze the qualitative legal data at
a basic would also be given.

The above skills are given keeping in view the


peculiar legal system of Pakistan in spite of the fact
that it is influenced by English legal system as the
country’s legal system is to take into account
injunctions of Qur'an and Sunnah thus the blend
requires a careful consideration of specific terms
that can not simply be as it is translated into and
described the way English writers do.

Course Objectives  To enable students understand important


terms and phrases of different branches of
law including the areas of criminal law and
civil law by introducing them some selected
lists of vocabulary along with the relevant
texts or materials.

 To enable students read a statute enacted in


English by giving them readings of selected
parts of statutes or statutory provisions.

 To enable students read a case after giving


them the required guidance on how to go
through case law by making them complete
readings of selected cases while giving along
with it exercises to solve.

 To make them able to write in legal language


by giving them exercises such as research
assignment and case briefs.

 To enable students to speak legal English by


giving them presentation tasks (which would
include giving answers to fellow students)
related to some legal issues of Pakistani
jurisdiction.

Learning Outcomes  By the end of this course students would


become familiar with the correct use of basic
terms and phrases of different branches of
law (including criminal and civil) keeping in
view the peculiarities of Pakistani legal
system and existing common law influences.

 Students would be able to understand how


to read a piece of legislation (keeping in view
for example what amounts to exceptions
and what are different parts of a statute and
what sections,sub-sections etc.are.

 Students are expected to read a case for the


purposes of making case briefs.

 To conduct legal research using various


sources of law and present it orally as well as
verbally.
Mode of Instruction 100% Traditional Classroom setting.However
from time to time students would find material in
google classroom as well as in their WhatsApp
group in form of videos,links and other materials.

The Instructor Mahvish Rani’s upcoming book ‘English for Pakistani Lawyers’ Vol.I
is not published yet however she would keep on sharing the necessary material
with the students.
It is to be added that commercial laws,Family Laws and International Law are
extremely important areas of law however the students would only be sent
vocabulary related to these and some other fields for a recommended reading.In a
short semester it would not be possible to deal with all the branches of law.
Students are welcome to come in the consultation hours to seek further
guidance.They are encouraged to give their feedback on LMS.
