2019 SENIOR DESIGN PROJECT SHOWCASE 3

Message from our INTERIM DEAN
Greetings,

On behalf of our students and faculty, I welcome you to

our tenth annual 2019 Senior Design Project Showcase
(SDPS) event from 1:00 – 5:00 p.m. on April 26, 2019 in
the USU Northridge Center and Grand Salon at California
State University, Northridge. This year’s SDPS features 29
senior design projects from all the undergraduate programs
in our college. Also, oral presentation sessions have been
planned where the teams from each program as selected
by the department/program have been invited to compete
for prizes. As in past years, the projects will be judged by a
distinguished panel of industry experts. You can find detailed
information about the event on the web at http://www.csun.
edu/engineering-computer-science/senior-design-project-showcase. It has been exciting
to watch this event grow and expand over the years and is a testament to our hardworking
students who are ably guided by our faculty and our supporters from industry.

By way of background, the College of Engineering and Computer Science is home to

about 4,500 students and 66 full-time faculty members, with active searches to fill eight
new faculty positions this fall. We offer ABET accredited undergraduate programs in Civil
Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Information Technology, Electrical Engineering,
Computer Engineering, Manufacturing Systems Engineering, Engineering Management,

American Council for Construction Education. We also offer several contemporary Masters
degree programs such as our newly revamped, online Engineering Management program
emphasizing entrepreneurship and innovation. The college graduates over 800 students
annually from these programs to meet emerging workforce needs. Our students continue
to garner accolades and recognition for their accomplishments at regional and national
competitions. Graduates from the college’s programs serve in leadership positions in
industry, government and academia. A testament of the vision of our President Dr. Dianne
Harrison: Through CSUN we all rise.

Don’t miss this opportunity to see and hear firsthand from our outstanding students and
soon to be graduates. I am sure you will be impressed with the diversity and quality of our
student projects and look forward to seeing you on April 26th.

Sincerely,

Hamid Johari, Ph.D.

FACULTY ADVISOR Educational Research on a Water Elevator

Dr. David Boyajian Project Description: This project involves modeling a water elevator in order to
Dr. Tadeh Zirakian study its behavior and relate its mechanical advantages to various fluid mechanics
TEAM MEMBERS properties. The reason that this small scale water elevator was constructed was
Antonio Agoncillo to get a better understanding of such real world applications. As developing
Ahmad Alahmad engineers, students have to grasp how to implement the theory they learn in the
Shayea Aldughaiem classroom. The properties of the water elevator were described with the energy
Saud Almutairi equation, conservation of mass, volumetric flow rate, and hydrostatic pressure.
Ali Alnaser
After conducting various tests, theoretical and experimental values were compared
Mohammad Alrasheed
Ahed Dashtti and an analysis of the data was assembled allowing for the development of a more
Kimberly Duran (Captain) thorough understanding of fluid mechanics.

Froilan Campos that rival current
Varun Ganesh commercial irrigation
Ian Hinze controllers. The hardware
Marvin A. Mallari (Captain)
Christian Martinez we have developed is
Daniel Stein modular allowing for
customization and can
be a drop-in replacement
for existing systems. Our
node controller utilizes
a Raspberry Pi to handle
network scheduling,
management, water use and error logging as well as sending commands to our
custom water control boards. Our water controller utilizes an STM32 Arm Cortex
Microcontroller to handle valve control, valve error detection and flow sensor input.
Each node is limited to 16 water controller boards of which each can handle 16
valves totaling 256 valves per node. Many nodes can be added to the network. New

choreograph complex sequences for fun displays.

FACULTY ADVISOR RCrypt

Dr. Jeff Wiegley Project Description:
RCrypt is a file
encryption and storage
TEAM MEMBERS solution for small &
Kabir Advani medium businesses who
Giovanni Orozco value data integrity,
Trishen Patel (Captain)

FACULTY ADVISOR Fuzzy Logic Controller of EV Brake System

Dr. Ruting Jia Project Description: Our project is creating a controller for an EV braking
system using fuzzy logic in Matlab to help the driver stay alert and avoid
collisions. It would help drivers keep a safe distance by using an audible sound
TEAM MEMBERS when it gets close to a car or red traffic light. If the driver gets too close, it will
Sayed Yousef Alhashemi start braking to give the driver more reaction time.
Saeed Almazrouei
Ard Belson Aunario (Captain)
Ali Omidfar

FACULTY ADVISORS Fuzzy Logic Traffic Light Controller

Dr. Ruting Jia Project Description:
The design of the traffic
light controls meant for
TEAM MEMBERS an intersection which
Karl Agbayani has six roads coming
Ofri Angel Eini (Captain) into it. This intersection
Janet Arikian has a main street
Robert Ayvazyan
with three lanes each
direction, a secondary
busy street with two
lanes each direction,
and a small road with
one line each direction.
For the two main roads there is a light for straight and right, and a separate light
for turning left. The side street has the option to turn right left or straight in
a green light. This gives us a total of 10 lights (without lights for pedestrians).
Because the system is symmetric, we have a correlation between two lights
all the time. When the main street has green for left it will be green in both
directions, if it’s green for the left turn both directions will have green. That cuts
the number of inputs by half.

Dr. Durul Ulutan
Project Description: Tennis is a game enjoyed
by many people. One of the biggest pains
with tennis is collecting the balls after the
TEAM MEMBERS
player is finished. After thorough research,
Towsif Ahmed the team realized there were no commercial
Hatem Almelaifi
automated tennis ball collectors on the
Omran Bahman
Jayshawna Jones market. The five steps of the design process,
Kerstern Malama (Captain) manufacturing, programing, and 3D printing,
were used to create an automated tennis
ball device to collect tennis balls in par with
customer critical-to-quality demands. A
business model canvas has been created
for the product outlining target customer
segments, a value proposition for the customer, cost structure, revenue streams, and
key partners to ensure it is able to launch on the market.
