Problem Statement
The first part of the feasibility report of a non-stop commuter/ tourist shuttle service on 14 km
double line between Rawalpindi (RWP) and Golra Junction station (GLRS) with the latter
harboring railway heritage museum, has convinced you to initiate the project. Hauling capacity
of the locomotive and number of coaches will be considered in the second part of the report.
Success of the project depends upon the frequency of up/down trains achievable in an auto block
signalling regime to be installed in this section.
Please put up your recommendations indicating maximum number of shuttle services at 65 km/h
speed, 9.00 hours to 21 hours daily, without affecting the existing timetable. You may consult
the Working Timetable for minimum bare running time, time required for acceleration and
deceleration, WW time and auto blocks of 400 meters each added by 180 meters adequate
distance.

Recommendations

A line capacity is defined as the total number of trains that can run on a certain block section over a
24 hour period.
Line Capacity can be calculated by using Scott Formula given as below.

C = 1440/(T + t) × E

Where C is the line capacity


T is the running time of the slowest train in the critical block section (minutes)
t is the Block operation time
E is the efficiency factor of the line

Calculation of Line Capacity


To calculate a line capacity, sum the running time of the slowest train and the block operation time,
divide 1440 by this result, then multiply by the efficiency factor.

T = 23 Minutes

t = 2 Minutes

E = 70%

C = 1440/(23+2) x 0.70 = 40 Trains for 24 Hours

C = 40/2 = 20 Trains for 12 Hours

As 6 number of UP Trains are already running between Rawalpindi and Golra Station during 9:00
to 21:00 hours as mentioned in the existing Timetable.

Therefore,
The Practical Line Capacity will be.

C = 20-6 = 14 Trains

Calculation of Time

V = S/t

Where ‘V’ is speed of train.

‘S’ is Distance between Rawalpindi to Golra Station

‘t’ Transit Time between Rawalpindi to Golra Station

t = S/V = 14 / 65 = 0.21 hours or 13 Minutes

Acceleration/deceleration Time = 5 Minutes

Way and Works Time = 5 Minutes


Total Transit Time = 13+5+5 = 23 Minutes

Therefore a shuttle service can be run in either UP or DN direction for every 40 minutes as
proposed in timetable below without affecting the existing timetable.
