Geol 565 Basic Things To Understand

The instructor provides guidance on the level of geochemical terminology expected for the class. Students do not need to understand all advanced terms to succeed. For homework, simple observations about diagrams are sufficient, without detailed chemical principles. The basics to understand are oxidation and reduction reactions in GWB, Eh, ∆G, ∆G', and ∆G°' calculations, how sorption impacts pollutant migration, and how kinetics are incorporated in GWB to model pollutant migration. Students should know how to create a conceptual model of a remediation system but not require advanced GWB skills. The class allows exploration of the modeling tool through a series of modules, and students are expected to have problems to solve.

[GEOL 565 A/B FA23] GWB--Terminology Demystified

Greetings Everyone,

As you dive into GWB you will encounter very advance geochemical terminology. I want to
assure you that you do not need to understand all of this terminology to be successful in
this class. Here are some bullet points about what my expectations are.

1. For homework, I do not expect you to provide detailed chemical principles behind every
questions. For example in Module 1, when asked to compare the two Eh/pH diagrams I
simply want the simplest set of observations made on your part. There is no need to define
specific half reactions or acid base reactions that are depicted in the diagram.

2. Some basic things to understand in this class.

a. What is an oxidation reaction? How do I create one in GWB

b. What is a reduction reaction? How do I create one in GWB.

c. What is Eh and ∆G? ∆G' and ∆G°'? How do I calculate them using GWB

d. What is sorption and how does it impact migration of pollutants?

e. How are kinetics (rates of reactions) incorporated into GWB? How does this impact
migration of pollutants.

3. You should know how to create a conceptual model of a remediation system. This is
literally a picture of what is being modeled. Every project requires one. This does not
require GWB.

To reiterate, GWB has many complex components to it. This class represents a series of
modules that allow you to explore this powerful geochemically modeling tool. I do not
expect you to become experts and I do expect you to have problems that you will need to
solve. This is how this class goes.

Please let me know if you have concerns about your ability to complete the class materials.
I am happy to discuss this with any of you individually.

Regards,

Rob
