Welcome and congratulations on your acceptance to The Faculty of Social

Sciences (FSS), UWI, Mona.

You are about to embark on an incredible journey in the vibrant Faculty of Social
Sciences, the home of the Tigers. We are delighted that you are joining our
respected community, where you will be exposed to new and refreshing ideas and
perspectives, be invited to seize leadership opportunities, form lifelong friendships,
gain practical experience, and have a fulfilling overall experience!

The entire UWI is in the throes of preparing to celebrate your arrival in August, and
as the FSS, we are planning special activities to help you get to know us better,
select the right courses and start off on the right footing. This year, UWI
commemorates its diamond jubilee - 75th anniversary - with the theme "Rooted,
Ready, Rising." It signifies our commitment to providing you with a solid foundation
(roots), empowering you to be prepared to face any challenge (being ready) and
soar to great heights (rising).

We have enclosed for you, a packet containing the Undergraduate Orientation,

Academic Advising and Registration Schedules for the Academic Year 2023-2024,
along with other essential materials to help you prepare for the year.

As outlined in the Orientation schedule, your Faculty Welcome Ceremony will be

held on Monday, August 28, 2023, at 10:00 AM in the Orientation Tent on the
grounds of the Old Library. We strongly encourage you to attend this Welcome,
and also attend the scheduled academic advising sessions in order to familiarize
yourself with your major, receive academic guidance on course selection and
registration, and acquaint yourself with the various resources, programmes, and
services available on campus.

While we know that you might have a relative or friend who is eager to advise you
on course selection and registration, we much prefer that you wait until you have
attended the Academic Advising before selecting your courses. Our Academic
Advising and Registration experience is specifically designed to help you start your
university journey on the right path. Trust us, the wait will be worthwhile!
Be assured that we have a cadre of dedicated staff ready and available to provide
you with support throughout your journey. Our lecturers, administrators and service
staff are committed to providing you with an exceptional learning experience, and a
caring and supportive environment. In your classes, ensure that you ask questions,
interrogate the information presented, and challenge yourself to think critically and
creatively and search for solutions to problems. Don’t be afraid! As the home of the
Tigers, we will ensure that you embody the Tiger's spirit of courage and strength.

Remember that the values of integrity, trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, and

empathy are just as important as your academic success and so DO NOT compromise
on them. They will pay you rich dividends.
