28
Information Sheet 3.2-1
Learning Objectives:
After reading this INFORMATION SHEET, YOU MUST be able to:
1. Understand the right preparation of composting area based on
requirements
2. Carry out preparation of raw materials
What is Composting?
Compost is decomposed organic material. Compost is made with
material such as leaves, shredded twigs, and kitchen scraps from
plants.
Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such
as leaves and food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil
and plants. Anything that grows decomposes eventually; composting
simply speeds up the process by providing an ideal environment for
bacteria, fungi, and other decomposing organisms (such as worms,
sowbugs, and nematodes) to do their work.
29
Composting provides a way not only to reduce the amount of waste
that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product
that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or houseplant.
30
use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in conventional
agriculture, and it has numerous ecological benefits.
Compared with conventional agriculture, organic farming uses fewer
pesticides, reduces soil erosion, decreases nitrate leaching into
groundwater and surface water, and recycles animal wastes back into
the farm.
Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is a process that relies on earthworms and
microorganisms to help stabilize active organic materials and convert
them to a valuable soil amendment and source of plant nutrients.
Earthworms will consume most organic materials, including food
preparation residuals and leftovers, scrap paper, animal manure,
agricultural crop residues, organic byproducts from industries, and
yard trimmings.
Vermicomposting is the science of manufacturing compost.
Earthworms that are inhabited to the soil get their nutrition from
engulfing biomass and digested biomass is excreted, forming a
hummus-like material known as vermin-compost.
31
Important elements present in an organic fertilizer:
Macro Elements
Nitrogen (N)
Phosphorus (P)
Potassium (K)
Micro Elements
Manganese (Mn)
Aluminum (Al)
Copper (Cu)
Molybdenum (Mo)
Zinc (Zn)
Iron (Fe)
Boron (B)
32
Site selection considerations:
It must be shaded (earthworms shy away from strong light)
Flood free
Accessible to water supply and source of compost material
Well ventilated
33
Process of making foliar fertilizer:
Prepare a 60-liter capacity container with an aeration facility – in
the absence of an aeration facility, prepare a plastic container and
a wooden ladle for stirring.
Put 50 liters of clean water (unchlorinated)
Aerate
Put 3kgs of vermicast or fortified compost inside the tea bag and
soak it in the water
Pour 500ml IMO after 30 minutes of brewing and return the cover
(optional)
Aerate or brew for 24 hours (starting from the first step)
Extract liquid and use within 24 hours.
34
Way of protecting yourself during the preparation and process of
organic fertilizers:
Use the following Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Gloves
Masks
Boots
35
Basic Raw Materials for Composting
Crop residue (rice straw, corn stalks, sugar cane bagasse, weeds,
etc.)
Animal manure
Leguminous plant
Kitchen waste
Dried leaves
Dried weeds
36
Straw, hay
Wood chips
37
Sugar cane
Corn stalks
38
Greens or nitrogen-rich materials
Greens or Nitrogen-rich materials are generally the moist, nitrogen-
rich organic material added to compost. Here is a short list of typical
greens we’ll use in our compost beds:
Grass clippings
39
Coffee grounds
40
Leguminous plants, plant residues

46
Fascinating facts about our worms
No RH bill- they double their population every month.
Hermaphrodites- when they mate, the two worms will both become
pregnant.
Voracious appetite- they can consume as much as their body
weight per day.
They breathe through their skin.
They shy away from light.
They have 5 hearts.
Very complete digestive system.
Very efficient farm worker- works 24 hours without day. All you
need to do is just give them food.

UNWANTED MATERIAL IN THE PILE
Meat Scraps- these can attract unwanted animal visitors and
create unpleasant odors. Rotten meat may produce bacteria that
can pose a health hazard.
Fats, oils, and grease- large amounts of these will give your
microbes indigestion slowing down the composting process. It also
attracts unwanted pests.
Droppings from caged birds- bird droppings, may contain
dangerous disease pathogens.
Droppings from dogs, cats, and other carnivores.
Human waste- the potential for spreading diseases.
Diseased plants- diseased could spread later with compost applied
to the plants.
