Preparing Composting Area

What is Composting?
Compost is decomposed organic material. Compost is made with
material such as leaves, shredded twigs, and kitchen scraps from
plants.
Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter, such
as leaves and food scraps, into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil
and plants. Anything that grows decomposes eventually; composting
simply speeds up the process by providing an ideal environment for
bacteria, fungi, and other decomposing organisms (such as worms,
sowbugs, and nematodes) to do their work.

The resulting decomposed matter, which often ends up looking like

fertile garden soil, is called compost.

29
Composting provides a way not only to reduce the amount of waste
that needs to be disposed of, but also of converting it into a product
that is useful for gardening, landscaping, or houseplant.

Some benefits of Composting

 Reduces the Waste Stream
Composting is a great way to recycle the organic waste we generate
at home. Food scraps and garden waste combined make up more
than 28 percent of what we throw away. Not only is food waste a
significant burden on the environment, but processing it is costly.
 Improves Soil Health and Lessens Erosion
Compost is an essential tool for improving large-scale agricultural
systems. Compost contains three (3) primary nutrients needed by
garden crops: Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium. It also
includes traces of other essential elements like Calcium,
Magnesium, Iron, and Zinc.
Instead of relying on synthetic fertilizers that contain harmful
chemicals, composting offers an organic alternative. Research has
shown the capability of compost to increase soil’s water retention
capacity, productivity, and resiliency.
 Conserves Water
Agriculture is a major consumer of water. Irrigation systems are
effective but are expensive and time-consuming for farmers to
manage.
So, how can composting help? Well, research has shown the water-
retaining capacities of soil increase with the addition of organic
matter. Using compost to foster healthy soil, farmers do not have to
use as much water and can still have higher yields than farming
with degraded soil.

Organic Farming, an agricultural system that uses ecologically based

pest controls and biological fertilizers derived largely from animal and
plant wastes and nitrogen-fixing cover crops. Modern organic farming
was developed as a response to the environmental harm caused by the

30
use of chemical pesticides and synthetic fertilizers in conventional
agriculture, and it has numerous ecological benefits.
Compared with conventional agriculture, organic farming uses fewer
pesticides, reduces soil erosion, decreases nitrate leaching into
groundwater and surface water, and recycles animal wastes back into
the farm.

How does a Fertilizer become Organic?

 No chemical residue
 Raw materials are natural and organic matter
 Undergone fermentation process
 Have lots of beneficial bacteria activity

Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is a process that relies on earthworms and
microorganisms to help stabilize active organic materials and convert
them to a valuable soil amendment and source of plant nutrients.
Earthworms will consume most organic materials, including food
preparation residuals and leftovers, scrap paper, animal manure,
agricultural crop residues, organic byproducts from industries, and
yard trimmings.
Vermicomposting is the science of manufacturing compost.
Earthworms that are inhabited to the soil get their nutrition from
engulfing biomass and digested biomass is excreted, forming a
hummus-like material known as vermin-compost.

Vermicompost is Superior to Other Conventionally Produced

Compost in a Number of Important Ways:
 Vermicompost acts as an inoculant in the production of compost.
 Worms have several other possible uses on farms, including value
as a high-quality animal feed.
 Vermicomposting supports supplemental income as it does not
require farmers to spend fortunes on fertilizers from the market.

31
Important elements present in an organic fertilizer:
Macro Elements
 Nitrogen (N)
 Phosphorus (P)
 Potassium (K)

Micro Elements
 Manganese (Mn)
 Aluminum (Al)
 Copper (Cu)
 Molybdenum (Mo)
 Zinc (Zn)
 Iron (Fe)
 Boron (B)

Characteristics of organic fertilizer:

 The materials are free from chemical substances
 There is a presence of high organic matter content
 Raw materials are indigenous in the locality

Preserving the potency of organic fertilizer:

 Store in a dry, dark, and cool place
 Packaging materials should be lined with a plastic bag
 For foliar, when aging adds molasses to prolong shelf-life

32
Site selection considerations:
 It must be shaded (earthworms shy away from strong light)
 Flood free
 Accessible to water supply and source of compost material
 Well ventilated

Characteristics of a good composting site:

 Good drainage system
 Availability of water supply
 Proximity to the source of raw materials
 Accessibility of the composting site
 Area of minimum contamination
 Type of soil
 Area with minimal sunlight

33
Process of making foliar fertilizer:
 Prepare a 60-liter capacity container with an aeration facility – in
the absence of an aeration facility, prepare a plastic container and
a wooden ladle for stirring.

depth) of the needed supply of fertilizer.
 Proximity and availability of raw materials;
 Area with minimal sunlight/covered garbage area;
 Good drainage system and area of minimum contamination; and
 Accessibility of the composting area

44

 Mulches from sugar cane trash, straw
 Kitchen waste
 Coir pith, plantation by products waste
 Mushrooms beds
 Oil cakes, milled by products
 Tea, coffee ground
 Fish and fish products without preservatives
 Seaweeds
 Crop residues (straws and peanut hulls)
 Microbial preparations (Trichoderma, rhizobia, mycorrhizae)

45
What are the materials PROHIBITED by the Philippine National
Standards (PNS)?
 Undecomposed human excrement including urine
 Sewage sludge
 Saw dust, bark, wood chips, wood ash
 By products of plant origin of food and textile industries
 Blood meal, bone, and other meals brought in from other sources
 Sedimentary rocks
 Igneous rocks
 Metamorphic rocks

46
Fascinating facts about our worms
 No RH bill- they double their population every month.
 Hermaphrodites- when they mate, the two worms will both become
pregnant.
 Voracious appetite- they can consume as much as their body
weight per day.
 They breathe through their skin.
 They shy away from light.
 They have 5 hearts.
 Very complete digestive system.
 Very efficient farm worker- works 24 hours without day. All you
need to do is just give them food.

47
DIFFERENT TYPES OF HOUSING (WORM BIN)

 Vermiculture Section
 Vermiculture in layered crates
 Vermiculture in a drum
 Vermiculture in a cemented plot
 Vermiculture pigpens
 Vermiculture in iron bars and laminated sacks
 Vermiculture most practical vermin bin option 1
 Vermiculture most practical vermin bin option 2

DESIGN OF VERMI BIN

 Stock filling of Substrate

 Sandwich; stock with a 2-inch layer alternating substrate. Water
every layer with IMO (Dilution rate: 20ml IMO for every liter of
water)

 Protection from Predators

 Cover the bin with leaves, sacks, or nets.

 Anaerobic and Aerobic Decomposition

 Spray or drench IMO 20ml/1liter of water
 Cover the bin with a sack or used tarpaulin
 Leave for 2 weeks
 After 15 days, remove the plastic covering
 Deploy the worms
 The earthworms will start to feed on this substrate
 Maintain optimum moisture
 Cover with net or leaves or used tarpaulin

 Maintaining Worm Bin

 Test the moisture content
 Squeeze a fistful of the substrate, 5-7 drops of water indicate about
80% moisture content.

 Protect your Worms from Natural Predators

 Birds, chickens, frogs
 Mice, snakes, flatworms, and even pigs love to eat worms
 Ants do not eat worms but they can kill your population if left
unattended.

1. Learn how to prepare and produce Vermicompost

How to prepare raw materials for organic fertilizer?

 Collect the raw materials

51
 Separate the raw materials

 Shred or grind the raw materials
