02 SWCE Solutions

The document discusses topics related to agricultural and biosystems engineering. It provides 5 sample questions related to watershed characteristics, rainfall, evapotranspiration, reservoir capacity, and isohyet mapping. The questions cover concepts like Thiessen polygons, sediment prediction, and calculating rainfall or flow based on watershed attributes.

AGRICULTURAL AND BIOSYSTEMS ENGINEERING

SWCE part 1

1. A basin drains 160 km2 and receives 112 cm of rainfall per year. The mean annual flow from the basin is
3.1 m3/s. What is the average annual evapotranspiration in cm/year?A.
50.9
B. 54.6
C. 68.4
D. 61.1

2. In a given watershed, a watershed with an area of 2,500 km2 received 130 cm precipitation. Estimate the annual
evapotranspiration if the average rate of flow is 30 m3/s.
A. 37.8 cm
B. 55.6 cm
C. 92.2 cm
D. 101.3 cm

3. A small water impounding reservoir with a capacity of 1,500 m3 was constructed on a catchment area of100 hectares. If the
annual sediment prediction is 4.26 m3/ha, what is the probable life of the reservoir before its capacity is reduced to 500 m3?
Assume a sediment trap efficiency of the dam of 31%.
A. 5. 4 years
B. 7.6 years
C. 13.6 years
D. 26.3 years

4. The La Mesa dam reservoir some years ago, which was a drought period, was near the critical level of water shortage, 80
meters in its monitoring gauge. Given that the average area of the reservoir water surface was approximately 6 square
kilometers and if under normal conditions 90% of the total rainfall over the watershed is stored into the reservoir, how
much rainfall was needed to raise the water level of the reservoir by 2 meters? The drainage area is about 2,700 hectares.
A. 222 mm
B. 494 mm
C. 722 mm
D. 889 mm

5. A watershed with area of 24 mi2 was subdivided by Thiessen polygons with area in mi2 and mean rainfall in inches
provided: (5.9, 0.6), (13, 1.7), (0.5, 4.5) and (4.6, 5.5). Determine the average areal precipitation
A. 1.85 in
B. 2.22 in
C. 4.10 in
D. 5.10 in

6. The Thiessen weights of the 4 raingauges A, B, C and D covering a river basin are 0.15, 0.25, 0.30 and
0.30 respectively. If the average depth for the basin is 5 cm, and the rainfalls recorded at B, C and D are5 cm, 4 cm and 5
cm respectively, what is the rainfall (cm) at A ? Give the answer.

7. The isohyets drawn for a storm which occured over a drainage basin of area 950 km2 yielded the following information in
the form of (isohyet interval in mm, area between isohyets in km2) : (85-75, 125), (75-65, 236), (65-55, 264), (55-45, 175)
and (45-35, 150). Determine the average depth (mm) of rainfall over the basin. Give the answer.
