MIGRATION TO ABYSSINIA
Q. (a) Write about the events of the migration to Abyssinia by
some of the early Muslims. [10] Paragraph 1 [Background] In the fifth year of prophethood (615 AD) the persecutions crossed all limits. An ayat was revealed about the earth being spacious for believers. “…And Allah’s earth is spacious. Only those who endure patiently will be given their reward without limit.” [39:10] The Holy Prophet advised his companions to migrate to Abyssinia as its ruler, Negus, was a Christian and a kind and just ruler. Muslims couldn’t go to Syria or Yemen as Makkans had links there but they had no influence in Ethopia.

This batch was led by Uthman b. Mazoon. They went in Rajab and Quraysh followed them till Jeddah but they escaped. In Shawwal a rumour spread that all Makkans accepted Islam. The Prophet had done Sajda after reciting Surah Najm and all Makkans fell in Sajda with him due to the impact of Allah’s word. It gave birth to thought that all Makkans accepted Islam. So Muslims returned but after finding it was a rumour some went back to Abyssinia and some entered Makkah.

3 Paragraph 3 [Second Batch, 616] In 616 AD 82 men and 18 women migrated. Then Makkans sent a delegation led by Amr b. Aas and Abdullah b. Rabi’ah with gifts to bring them back. He first met the courtiers gave them gifts and informed them with his purpose and they agreed to support. Then he appeared in the court of the king and complained about Muslims and demanded their arrest. King was just so he called for Muslims. Jaffar b. Abi Talib delivered a speech and impressed him. He asked Jaffar to recite some Quran so he recited Surah Maryam which is about miraculous birth of Jesus. On this Negus wept and remarked: “By God! Gospel and Quran are the lights of the same lamp.”

4 Paragraph 4 [Jaffar Defeats A’mr] The next day ‘Amr came and raised the issue of the divinity of Jesus. Jaffar was called again and inquired about beliefs related to Jesus so he recited Surah Maryam before him and the king wept and understood the reality of Quran. He also said that we believe that he was the servant of Allah, messenger of Allah, word of Allah and spirit of Allah. The Negus drew a line in the sand saying that the difference between Islam and Christianity was as thin as that line. He refused to return Muslims and gave them asylum. The king was a great scholars and knew the correct teachings of Gospel so he got impressed by the accurate beliefs of Muslims. He returned the gifts back to Amr and returned him back empty handed.

5 Significance Muslims got a place of safety and refuge. They got some relief from the constant persecutions of Makkans. It was their first political move and they were successful in it. It was the first experience of practicing religion without Prophet. They got a place to practice their religion freely. Muslims and Christians got closer and learnt similarities. Number of Muslims increased as Negus became a Muslim. Muslims learnt that migration was a good solution of the problems and so it also led up to the great migration to Yathrib.

6 (b) Why did Quraysh persue these Muslims? [4]
They considered them a threat to their religion.
They also considerd them a threat to their reputation. They thought that they will come back with more power. It will encourage others also to migrate if these people will be left in peace there.

7 (b) What might be learned from the way the Muslims were treated in Abyssinia? [4]
The Muslims of Makka were given a fair hearing by the Negus,
so now people should also be ready to listen and judge fairly in a dispute. The Muslims were allowed to stay in Abyssinia and were allowed to practise their faith freely, so people now can take the example to allow others to come and live among them and have religious tolerance for other beliefs. The emigrants acted in a way that led to them being welcomed and given the right to stay, so a lesson could be to be always respectful and honest.
