Writing 1

Over the years many places in the world have developed in different
ways and people have adapted to them. But we need to know that
people have different preferences about where they prefer to live as
there are people who like living in cities or the countryside. We are going
to compare the two different places.
The first point that I want to compare is related to pollution as people who
live in a city need to face this important factor that could affect their
health. In cities, there is a lot of pollution that could affect the health of
many people because the air is contaminated by chemicals, and water
needs to pass many processes to be clean to use in houses. On the
other hand, people who live in the countryside can have a better
ecosystem to live in because essential things for human lives like air and
water are very clean.
The second point is related to alimentation because in cities you can see
that the most of food has many preservatives and people can have
access to a lot of junk food. In comparison, in the countryside people can
access organic and fresh food that could help their bodies.
The last point is related to technology since people who live in cities can
have better access to new technology and have a better knowledge of
how to use it. Despite this, people who live in the countryside can´t have
a good connection to the Internet and this is one of the main problems to
be connected to technology.
In conclusion, these kinds of lives are very different but they have good
and bad sides that could depend on the point of view of the person and
how the person wants to live.

Education is considered one of the most important pillars to build a good

society. Nevertheless, education can be affected by the economy of the
person as there are two types of education which are public and private.
Let´s compare in a few lines these two types of education.
The first point is related to the accessibility of education as public schools
can be accessed by many students as it doesn't have any pay during the
whole year. In contrast, private schools can be accessed only by students
whose families can pay for them.
The second point is related to the number of students that are part of the
two types of education. The number of students who assist in public
schools is high since they don´t need to pay for this type of education. In
contrast, the number of students who can be at private school is smaller
than in public schools as they need to pay for their education, so only if
they can be paid for the whole year can be part of private schools.
The last point is related to the quality of education, the factor of the amount
students affects a lot this point as teachers of public schools need to teach
to a big number of students so it could be difficult for the teachers to teach
them. On the other hand, teachers of private schools can organize their
time better to teach the select number of students that they have and solve
all the questions that students could have.
In conclusion, the type of education and the quality of education that could
have students will depend on their economic possibilities but the most
important for the students is to receive an education that could help them
academically to improve their skills every year.

For each quote from an expert, provide two kinds of information: the
opinion of the author that the quote supports, and how the quote
strengthens the author’s argument.
• David Greenfield, PhD (paragraphs 12–13):
“Smartphones, of course, allow us to seek rewards (including
videos, Twitter feeds, and news updates, in addition to e-mail)
anytime and anywhere. Is such behavior unhealthy?
“That really depends on whether it’s disrupting your work or
family life,’ Greenfield says.”

Author’s opinion that the underlined part of the quote supports:

Smartphones can be a problem for our families and work if we
become addicted.
How the quote strengthens the author’s argument: It shows not
necessarily it can be considered addictive as long it does not
affect your personal life.

• The journal, Personal and Ubiquitous Computing (paragraph 17):

“According to a 2011 study published in the journal
Personal and Ubiquitous Computing, people aren’t addicted to
smartphones themselves as much as they are addicted to
‘checking habits’ that develop with phone use—including
repeatedly (and very quickly) checking for news updates, e-mails,
or social media connections.”

Author’s opinion that the quote supports: People can be more

addicted to check their notifications than the smartphone.
How the quote strengthens the author’s argument: According to a
journal the addiction that we could have checking smartphones is
developed by the daily phone use.

• Nicholas Carr (paragraph 21):

“By design,” he says, “it’s an environment of almost
constant interruptions and distractions. The smartphone, more
than any other gadget, steals from us the opportunity to maintain
our attention, to engage in contemplation and reflection, or even to
be alone with our thoughts.”
Author’s opinion that the quote supports: Smartphones can cause
problems to keep our attention for a lot of time.
How the quote strengthens the author’s argument: Smartphones
is the most distracting gadget that could affect the attention of
people as it causes constant distractions.
• Leslie Perlow, PhD (paragraphs 27–28):
“As described in her book, Sleeping with Your Smartphone,
the (experiment) group found that taking regular ‘predictable time
off’ (PTO) from their PDAs resulted in increased efficiency and
collaboration, heightened job satisfaction, and better work-life
balance.
Four years aſter her initial experiment, Perlow reports, 86%
of the consulting staff in the firm’s Northeast offices—including
Boston, New York, and Washington, D.C.—were on teams
engaged in similar PTO experiments.”

Author’s opinion that the quote supports: If you follow a time off
smartphone, it could help you to balance the constant use of
smartphones.
How the quote strengthens the author’s argument: A group of
people found that predictable time off helped them to improve and
balance their work-life.
