L4.Plant Layout and Material Handling

The document discusses different types of plant layouts: 1. Process plant layout groups similar processes together. Commonly used for batch production of a variety of products. 2. Product plant layout arranges machinery according to the processing sequence of a product. Used for mass production of a small variety. 3. Cellular/group layout combines process and product layouts into autonomous manufacturing cells that can produce finished parts. Commonly applied to machined parts. 4. Fixed position layout brings all resources to single, large products like ships and aircraft. The document then outlines procedures for layout design and discusses the computerized method of CRAFT (Computerized Relative Allocation of Facilities Techniques).

Material Handling University of Ruhuna.
Plant Layout

• Plant Layout is a floor plan of the physical facilities which

are used in production.

Types of Layouts
– Process Plant Layout
– Product Plant Layout
– Group Layout
– Fixed Position Layout
Objectives of the Plant Layout

• Minimize the investment of equipment

• Minimize overall production time
• Utilize the existing space more effectively
• Provide employee convenience, safety and comfort
• Maintain flexibility of arrangement and operation
• Minimize material handling cost
• Facilitate the manufacturing process
• Facilitate the organizational structure
