Ereen Alvarez Reflection Paper On LID Webinar

This document summarizes a lecture on using low impact development (LID) for sustainable stormwater runoff management. It discusses how LID aims to mimic natural water cycles through principles like runoff prevention, treating water at its source, and creating multifunctional landscapes. The lecture provided examples of LID tools like infiltration trenches, tree box filters, and rain gardens. While new to the country, the document expresses hope that LID can be more widely adopted to help address issues from increased urbanization like high stormwater runoff and non-point source pollution.

CIV 812M- Reflection Paper on the lecture "Sustainable Stormwater Runoff Management using
Low Impact Development (LID)."

After watching the webinar of Dr. Marla about LID, we were able to have an overview of
the basic principles, processes, benefits and limitations of using LID for stormwater runoff
management. Low Impact Development also targets 6 Sustainable Development Goals: 6 (Clean
water), 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), 13
(Climate Action), 14 (Life below Water), 15 (Life on Land). Having the knowledge about LID gave
us hope of achieving these goals in building a better future. Because of the current situation we
have wherein there is high land use change and increasing urbanization, these result to increased
stormwater runoff which is a source of non-point pollution. That is why we should consider
stormwater in planning and incorporate LID solutions in our urban water cycle unlike the old ways
wherein we are only considering water from water supply and wastewater but our stormwater
runoff just goes directly to the water source. Principles of LID is caring about the quality of
stormwater, runoff prevention, and treating or controlling it right away from the source, creating
multifunctional landscapes, and to educate and maintain. LID concept is being able to mimic
natural environment in an urban environment in which we are able to achieve the same percent
of evaporation, runoff and infiltration. This also helps the ability of the groundwater to recharge.
Dr. Marla was also able to show examples of the LID tools they have studied and have already
used like Infiltration trench, Tree box filters, Rain garden and others which all have different
applicability depending on the objective of its use. Seeing these examples made us realize that it
is really possible to do this whether in a small scale like in a household or in a large scale like the
subdivisions. LID system is very different and new to our country which can be very hard to apply
at first but I hope that more people will see the positive impact and engage to the study and
application of this system, and make this our new normal.
