A brief introduction to task 1
- Task 1 is generally the easier task out of the two you will deal with in
Writing, with a word count requirement of about 150.
- Task 1 requires the writer to analyze and highlight the details of a
graph/map/process chart.
- Task 1 has a lower vocabulary requirement, meaning that you don’t
need to use ornate vocabulary to get a high vocabulary score.
- Task 1 focuses on the technical side of writing, and thus requires good
structure, cohesion and coherence.

- A Task 1 IELTS report must begin with an introductory sentence


which:
● describes the purpose of the charts
● mentions the type of graph(s)
● is a restatement of the instructions

Practice: Writing introduction
1. The pie charts below give information about the water used worldwide for
agriculture, industrial use, and domestic use.
2. The bar chart below shows the proportions of English men and women of different
ages who were living alone in 2011.
3. The bar chart below shows how frequently people in the USA ate in fast-food
restaurants between 2003 and 2013.
4. The bar chart below shows figures for attendances at hospital emergency care
departments in Northern Ireland by six age group in December 2016 and December
2017.
5. The bar chart below shows the total number of Olympic medals won by twelve
different countries.
Overview
- Describe the most striking feature(s) of the graph(s).
- Can be: its prominent trends, or similarities and differences between
categories (notable increases/decreases/fluctuations and ranking).
- The body paragraphs should elaborate on the trends written in the overview
- Do NOT contain any specific information such as numbers, percentages,
quantities.
- Vocab for Overview:

How to group details?
- Put the largest data into one group and the smallest data
into another group
- Group data that follows similar trends:
+ Increasing/Decreasing/Fluctuating
+ Starting/Finishing at the same point
- Group according to categories (i.e: luxury vs. essential
items)
