Cell phones were once seen as distractions in the classroom but can now be used as learning tools if implemented appropriately. Phones have advanced and can improve learning outcomes when used for tasks like typing essays, looking up information, and peer collaboration. However, phones also emit electromagnetic radiation which may increase cancer risk, especially for developing children. Excessive phone use and proximity to the head can lead to overexposure. While mobile learning increases access to content anywhere, anytime, it can also lead to distractions, lack of social interaction, overreliance on technology, and poor personalization.

Introduction

Cell phones were once considered a distraction in the classroom. While that still remains
true, educators have slowly found that phones can be turned into learning tools. Phones have
evolved over the years into powerful teaching aids that, when used appropriately, can improve
learning outcomes (Becton, 2023). Floyd, 2019 stated the reasons of using mobile phone, “I’ve
also seen the value that cell phones can bring to education. Students who might not have access
to computers at home can type and submit essays on their phones. Students can quickly look up
some information and verify its validity. Furthermore, students can also use their cell phones to
collaborate with their peers.”
Smartphones have become an ingrained aspect in the lives of students. When talking
about benefits, it’s important to appreciate that smartphones enable students to learn through a
medium that they find most comfortable. This makes accessing learning content easy, regardless
of the location or the time of day. So, students can have access to the tools that expand their
learning without interruption, and can enhance collaboration between students, teachers, parents,
and the wider school community (Sambell, 2021).
However, mobile phones emit radiofrequency radiation, which connects them to cell
towers that provide coverage. The signal that smartphones emit is called electromagnetic
radiation or EMF. This electromagnetic radiation covers other types of radiation, such as heat
and microwaves, which are emitted as byproducts when mobile phones are used. When we place
our mobile phones close to our ears, the radiowaves are passed on directly into our brains. This
has a huge impact on our overall health. According to the WHO, there is a strong link between
mobile phone use and increased risk of cancer. Kids are highly vulnerable to the bad effects of
mobile phones as their bodies are still developing. Moreover, carrying mobile phones in their
hands, pockets, or bags results in over-exposure to EMF. This exposure continues as kids tend to
place their phones close to their heads when they sleep (Nair, 2023).
One of the many benefits of mobile learning in education is that it requires students to
access the material through a mobile device. However, this also means students are much more
likely to become distracted, lack of social interaction, reliance on technology, and poor
personalization (Sullivan, 2022).
