Spring 2020 Update (1) - 1
Spring 2020 Update (1) - 1
I hope this message finds you all well. As you know we are in the midst of a very unusual situation. Our
first priority is to ensure the safety and well-being of students, faculty and staff at Gardendale High
School. Although I completely understand the decision made by state leaders, my heart hurts over the
way we had to end the traditional setting of the school year.
Through this challenging time, we do not want to neglect the instructional side of what we do at GHS. It
is for that reason that we want to continue to offer lessons and resources to keep students engaged,
learning and growing. Beginning next week, teachers will work from home to offer instructional
material, lessons and educational activities for the engagement and enrichment of our students.
Please have your student check his or her jefcoed.com email for information from their teachers. Also,
encourage them to join each teacher’s Google Classroom. This and email will be the primary sources for
communication from teachers. Teachers will be using Edgenuity and other online sources to
communicate with students. All of these can be accessed from computers, laptops, iPads, or
smartphones. We understand that some may not have that access. If this is the case, please contact the
appropriate teachers. Packets can be made available upon request for those with no access to a
computer or internet.
Due to the nature of the situation, grades are in the process of being finalized. For students in good
standing (currently passing), the 3rd nine weeks average will be the final grade for that class. Teachers
are in the process of tying up loose ends with students who may be failing a particular class. Teachers
will be reaching out to those students/parents with further instructions.
Several have asked about retrieving items from lockers. Unfortunately, we cannot open school to
anyone until we are given the “all clear”. As soon as it is possible, we will ensure everyone has the
opportunity to retrieve items and take care of any other business.
Due to the restrictions set in place by the CDC on gatherings of more than 10, we are unable to hold
traditional graduations, proms, plays, luncheons, or awards ceremonies at this time.
Parents, if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to the particular teacher, one of our
counselors, or grade level administrators. We are here to help during this unprecedented time. I will
pass along more information as it becomes available. Stay safe.
Sincerely,
Shelton Dukes
