Unit Conversions Worksheet

The document provides conversion factors for common units of measurement in physics including mass, length, time, temperature, area, volume, speed, force, pressure, energy and power. It then gives examples of conversion factor questions including converting between pounds and kilograms for an animal's weight loss, converting between gallons, liters and cubic centimeters for volume, converting speed between meters/second and kilometers/hour, and converting between different units for length, mass, volume, time and more.

Conversion Factors in Physics

In physics, you are frequently asked to convert between units of measurement.
Conversion factors are therefore very important in physics. For example, you
may be asked to measure the number of kilometers your school bus travels in
an hour and may need to convert the result in a mile. A handy conversion
factor table between different units is therefore very useful. Here we have
listed some common conversion factors you may require while solving your
physics problems.
Mass :

1 tonne = 1000 kg
1 kg = 1000 gm
1 kg = 2.2046 pound (lb) = 6.022 x 1026 amu
1 lb = 453.6 gm
Length :

1 in = 2.54 cm
1 ft = 12 in = 30.48 cm

1 light year (LY) = 9.461 x 1012 km

1 parsec = approximately 3.26 light year (LY)

Time :

1 Day= 86400 Sec

1 Year = 3.16×107 Sec

1 min = 60 sec

1 hour = 3600 sec = 60 min

Temperature :

°F = 9/5 x °C + 32
°C = (°F – 32) x 5/9
Absolute Temperature, Kelvin, K = °C + 273.15
z K = -273.15 °C = -459.72 °F

Area :

1 m2 = 104 cm2 = 10.76 ft2

1 in2 = 0.00694 ft2

Volume :
1 gallon = 4.5 L

1 liter (L) = 1000 cm3

Speed :

1 m/s = 3.28 ft/s= 2.24 mile/h

1 Km/h= 0.621 mile/h = 0.278 m/s

Force and Pressure :

1 N = 105 dyne = 0.2248 lb wt

1 lb wt = 4.4482 N

Energy and Power :

1 Joule =107 erg=0.239 Cal

1 KW-h= 3.6×106 Joule
Using the above conversion factors solve the following questions.

Q1. Lucy’s dog weighed 44 kg. The vet said that it had to lose at least 5 kg.
Lucy’s scales on weighed in pounds . About how many pounds does the dog
have to lose?

Q2. About how many litres are these? A) 2 gallons B) 10 gallons C) 22400
cm3?

Q3. A car moves at a constant speed, If the formula to calculate average

speed is distance moved / time taken , Calculate the average speed of a car in
m/s when it moves a distance of 50 m in 3.9 s. Also calculate the average
speed in Km /h for the same values of distance and time.

Q4 Convert the following :

a) 2.5 cm3 = ___________ mL

b) 25 mm = ________ cm

c) )0.134 m = ______ km

d) 0.025 kg = _______ g
