COPLANAR, CONCURRENT FORCE
SYSTEMS

Coplanar, concurrent force system - is a group of forces all of which are on the same
plane, and which intersects in a common point.
Resultant of a system of forces - is the minimum system of forces which will produce the
same effect as the original system.
1. A single force
2. A pair of equal, opposite and parallel forces called a couple.
3. A single force and a couple.
Equilibrant- of a system of forces has the same magnitude as the resultant of the system,
but is of opposite sense. In other words, the equilibrant will balance or cancel the
resultant.
Components of a force - are the two or more forces, which acting together, will produce
the same effect as the original force.

To find their resultant graphically, draw the vectors representing each force tail to
tip. The resultant is the vector to be drawn from the tail of the first vector to the tip of the
last vector.

Letter R in the figure is the Resultant Force/vector, and angle θ is the Direction
Angle of the Resultant Force/vector which is always measured from the horizontal.
For analytical solution, the resultant will be determined by the algebraic sum of the
x-components(εFx); then the algebraic sum of the y-components (εFy).
By vector Addition:
R = (εFx)2 + (εFy)2
εFy
εFx
Example 3.1: Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant of the forces shown
analytically and graphically.
300 N
500 N
600 450
350
400 N
Analytical Solution:
εFx = 300 sin 450 - 500 cos 300 + 400 sin 350 = 8.55 N
εFy = 300 cos 450 + 500 sin 300 – 400 cos 350 = 134.47 N
R= (εFx)2 + (εFy)2
= (8.55)2 + (134.47)2
R = 134.74 N (Ans.)
εFy 134.47
εFx 8.55
