The document presents the results of a study that investigated the amount of time female secondary school students and female adults in their households spend exercising each day over a week. Data was collected through questionnaires from 30 student-adult pairs. Various statistics about exercise frequency, duration, and type are presented for both groups through tables, figures, and analysis.

Project Title
To investigate the amount of time female students of form 4 at a girls’ secondary school spends
exercising each day versus a female adult in their household for the period of Monday, May 9th
to Friday 13th May, 2022.

3
Purpose
Upon returning to physical school our classmates discussed amongst their peers that their parents
are pressuring them to start exercising and taking care of their health. Some students expressed
that when their parents returned back to work after the Covid-19 lockdown, they felt sluggish
and noticed a change in their physical appearance. Students expressed that their parents felt
obsessed with exercising and taking care of their health. During the discussion students
expressed how annoyed they felt with their parents opinions of pressuring them to exercise.
Following this, students voiced their opinion of how they spend more time exercising rather than
adults, because adults start exercising and stop within a week. Our group decided to test whether
this statement is true or not.

4
Method of Data Collection
Our school has a student population of about nine hundred students. There are five forms four
classes, each with approximately thirty-five students. The data was collected via random
sampling. A sample of sixty was used.

1) To collect data for this investigation, a questionnaire was created for thirty students and a
female adult from their household to be completed.
2) 60 questionnaires were printed out.
3) Numbers 1 to 35 were written on identical rectangular pieces of paper and folded
identically.
4) The pieces of paper were then placed into a box and the box was shaken. Six pieces of
paper were chosen without looking
5) A list containing 6 numbers was created and five copies of the list were made.
6) During the home room period of the morning, Monday 9th may, 2022, our group went to
all five forms 4 classes and requested permission to speak to the class to explain the
purpose of our SBA. The group leader introduced the group and explained the purpose of
the SBA and asked for the assistance of 6 students who lives with a female adult at home
to complete the questionnaire. Each form teacher was asked and given a copy of the
number list. (If one of the 6 students were unwilling to participate then that questionnaire
would be given to the next student on the roll)
7) After receiving the corresponding names to the selected numbers, each of the 6 students
from each of the 5 classes was given 2 hardcopy questionnaires to complete along with a
female along with a female adult from their household.
8) All answered questionnaires were collected on Friday 13th may, 2022. The data was
collected, organized and analyzed.

Therefore, the data collected was Quantitative and Continuous.

= 10.05 minutes
From these calculations it was seen that Students spent more time exercising rather than adults.

17
Statements of Findings

In figure 1, it is seen that the frequent amount of time both students of form four and adults spent
exercising for the duration of one week was Regularly (more than 3 days).
In figure 2, it was seen that the most preferred form of exercise by both students of form four
was walking and running which was 27% and the most preferred form of exercise by adults was
also walking or running which was 47%.
In figure 3, it is seen that both students of form four and adults spent more time exercising during
the lockdown.
It is seen from the stem plot, figure 4, that the amount of time spent exercising by students of
form four ranges from 70 to 600 minutes and the amount of time spent exercising by adults
ranges from 30 to 480 minutes.
It can be seen from the box and whiskers plots, figures 5 and 6 that the amount of time spent
exercising by both students of form four and adults shows that the distribution was positively
skewed for both students and adults.
As seen in the analysis of data, table 6, the mean amount of time spent exercising by students of
form four was 228.83 minutes; the variance is 18488.89 minutes and the standard deviation is
135.97 minutes.
As seen in table 7, in mean amount of time spent exercising by adults was 218.78 minutes, the
variance is 14808.24 minutes and the standard deviation is 121.68 minutes.
Therefore, it is seen that students spent more time exercising rather than adults during the
lockdown.

18
Limitations

1) Accuracy of data received from students and adults cannot be verified.

2) No way of verifying that adults and students were honest when filling out the data.

19
Recommendation

In our investigation, we found that there are large number adults that do not believe that they are
achieving enough exercise. We also discovered that students disagree to adults exercising more
than them. So we recommend that the school:
- Allow children more access to space to achieve more exercise
- Encourage children to bring devices to keep count of steps
- Engage students in sports days and exercise-related activities.
- Allow the students to use the sports equipment during free periods.
- Encourage the PTA to take part in the extra circular sports club after school.

20
Conclusion

From this investigation, it was seen that female students of form 4 at a girls' secondary school
exercises more than a female adult in their household for the period of Monday, May 9th to
Friday 13th May,2022. The female students spent an average of 228.83 minutes exercising
whereas the female adults spent an average of 218.78 minutes exercising during this period of
time.
