How is the Bible different from all these other books? Hold up your Bible as you wait for the children to answer. Yes, the Bible is God’s Book. It tells us who God is. It tells us the things that God has done. And it tells us what God wants and how we can please Him. Long ago, the Bible did not look like the usual books that we have now. GOD SPEAKS TO US THROUGH THE BIBLE Scanned with CamScannerelved God's messages ho rect eee hich looked like wrote them In scrolls this. Show them the scroll. These scrolls were thelr books at that time. It was only after many, many years that these scrolls were printed Into a book similar to the books we read today. (a BIBLE STORY (Open your Bible to the story.) There was a scrolls got lost. No o passage of today’s time when some of these ne knew that they were in the Temple. The Temple was the house of the Lord—the place where the people of Judah worshiped Him. ‘One day, the king of Judah decided to have the Temple repaired. (Unroll the scroll to show Picture 1.) So the Israelites were busy repairing the Temple for many days. The High Priest Hilkiah was always in the Temple to see how the workers were doing. One day, he found something unusual in the Temple. It looked like pieces of old paper rolled together. He picked it up carefully and discovered that it was a scroll. He shook the dust off the scroll and unrolled it. He recognized the scroll at once. It was the book that contained the laws that God wanted the people to obey. (Unroll the scroll to show Picture 2.) Hilkiah went to Shaphan, who was the secretary of King Josiah, and showed him the scroll. Shaphan unrolled the scroll and read it. He knew right away that the king would be happy to know what they had found. Shaphan immediately went to King Josiah and reported about the scroll. He said, "Dear king, the High Priest Hilkiah found this scroll in the Temple. It contains the laws of the Lord.” Then Shaphan showed the scroll to King Josiah. “Please read what is written on the scroll,” King Josiah requested. (Unroll the scroll to show Picture 3.) So Shaphan started reading LEARNING ABOUT GOD the scroll to the king. While sha, a reading the laws of God written on Pan w the king was very quiet. He lista’ Strat carefully. MEd ven King Josiah realized that the tay. Lord did not allow them to Worship oF the and things. The law must have said go. *tue, fike this: “Do not make for yourselves n**ting and images. Do not bow down to rte worship them. I will punish those who wen them but | will show my love to those’ love me and obey my laws” (see ri 0 20:4-6). So King Josiah tore his Clothes. lus cried. He felt so sorry for not obeying ie ‘ laws. He must have prayed, "Lord, |am ye sorry. Please forgive us for not obeying ye laws.” ined King Josiah knew that God wanteg y ; he people to know about His laws which we written on the scroll. So he gathered ajj ae leaders in his kingdom and all the people in the city together in the Temple. He probaby, commanded his messengers to go aroun, shouting, “Come, everyone! Young and old. men and women! Let us gather together. The king wants you to know about the scroj that was found in the Temple. It contains the laws of the Lord.” (Unroll the scroll to show Picture 4.) And so King Josiah read the scroll to all the people from beginning to end. Then he made a promise to the Lord. He said, “Lord, | am going to obey all the laws written on this scroll from now on.” The people also realized that they had not obeyed God's laws. They felt so sorry for not pleasing God. And just like King Josiah, they prayed and promised to obey God's laws, too. Ask the following questions to help the children review the story: Who found the scroll? Where did he find it? What did the scroll contain? What law was included in the scroll? What did King Josiah do? What did the people do after King Josiah read the scroll to them?Breaker: Before proceeding to the next activity, you may have the children stand up and sing The Bible Says once more while making a joyful noise with their maracas. RELATION TO LIFE King Josiah and his people learned about what God wanted them to do when they read the scroll. Today, we can also learn what God wants when we read and study the Bible. Let me open my Bible right now and read a verse to you. | will also put this verse on the board so we can read It together. Open your Bible to 2 Timothy 3:16 and read, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching the truth.” Tape on the board the book cutout where you have written the verse. Let the children read the verse together. Then ask them what it says about the Bible. Yes, this verse tells us that everything written in the Bible came from God. The Bible is God’s book and He gave it to us to teach us the truth about Himsel The Bible teaches us what pleases God— these are the right things to do. The Bible also tells us what does not please God—these are the wrong things we should stop doing. When we read the Bible, we learn to know God, and we learn to love and obey Him. APPLICATION Right now most of you are still learning to read. But even if you cannot read the Bible by yourself yet, there are ways for you to know what God Is saying in His book. First, you can listen carefully during our Bible Story time here In Sunday school. Second, you can ask your parents, your big brother or sister, or your yaya to read a Bible story for you. Third, you can ask your parents to buy you a Bible for children, or comics, storybooks and coloring books that contain Bible stories. Show the sample copies to the kids. If your church has a library that has Bible storybooks for children, encourage the kids to borrow these books. Fourth, you can watch movies of Bible stories on DVD. Show the sample copies to the kids. Distribute to the children the pieces of notepaper where you wrote the Bible story references. Give this to your parents, older brother or sister, or your yaya when you get home. It is a list of stories that they can read to you from the Bible. Ask them to read one story to you every day. You and your parent/older sibling/ yaya can set a special time for Bible reading, such as before you go to bed. © LIFE VERSE Have the children reread the verse several times. Then remove the copy and ask groups of children to stand up and recite the verse from memory (Ex: all who are wearing red, all who like spaghetti, all who have a pet, all who love God, etc.). teat OFFERING Bring out the offering box and ask a child to collect the offerings as the class sings a song about giving. 8 CLOSING PRAYER Gather the children in a circle for prayer. Have them form a line. Tell them that they must follow you wherever you go and copy your actions. Go to the head of the line and lead the children around the room, doing different actions as you go. You can flap your arms like wings, wiggle your bottom like a duck, turn your head to left and right while saying, “Quack, quack,” etc. We just played a very nice game. Did you enjoy following Mother Duck? How did you show that you were her ducklings? Let the children respond. Was it always easy to follow the actions of the “Mother Duck"? Why? Let the children respond again. It is easy to follow actions when we are looking and carefully listening to the person we are following. A mother duck always wants her ducklings to follow her to keep them from danger. Our God is like that, too. He wants us to follow Him. There are commands that He wants us to obey. These commands are written in the Bible. In our story today, God gave some important commandments to His people Which He wants us to follow also. i P\ BIBLE STORY (Open your Bible to Exodus 19.) Long ago, the Lord God chose a nation to be His very own, people. He gave them a leader named Moses, Moses told the people everything that God wanted them to do. ‘One day, Moses told the people that they would worship the Lord at the foot of Mount Sinai. Everyone should prepare for this special time. So the people went to the river, Listen to these sounds and guess what the people did. (Play recording of splashing water. Wait for the children to answer.) That's right, they took a bath! What else did they do? (Play recording of clothes swishing in water. Wait for the children to answer.) Yes, they also washed their clothes. They wanted to be clean when they worship the Lord. Early the next morning, the whole nation gathered at the foot of Mt. Sinai. What do you think the people heard? (Play recording of thunder. Let the children answer.) Yes, they heard thunder! ‘There was lightning and thunder on the mountain. They heard another loud sound, too. Can you guess what it was? (Play recording of trumpet sound. Let the children answer.) That's right, they heard a very loud trumpet sound! And it kept getting louder. Clouds of smoke covered the mountain, too. The people became afraid as they watched, As they looked at the mountain, they saw how holy and great the Lord is. Then Moses spoke to God and God told him to climb the mountain. So Moses went up the mountain. Then the Lord began to speak and these are some of the commandments that He wanted His people to obey. (Summarize the commandments by reading to the children the list below. Have them repeat each commandment after you. You may also add simple actions they can mimic as they recite each command. Be sure to explain the commands briefly.) 1. 1am the Lono your God... Worship no God but Me. (Raise your hands as if in worship.) ‘This means we should love God more than anyone or anything. GOD TEACHES US HOW To LIVE Scanned with CamScanner- You should have a day Do not make for yourselves images and idols; and do not worship them. (Cover your mouth with x your hand after reciting the Q@ © command.) This means we should not use God’s Name to express our anger or surprise. We should not use God's Name to make silly jokes, either. of rest. (Fold your hands and bow your head as if praying.) This means we should have one day in the week to rest and worship God. We do not work or go to school on this day. What day is our day of rest? Let the children answer. That's right, Sunday. Respect your father and your mother. (Bow your head and iS bring your hand to your a forehead as if showing respect the Filipino way— pagmamano.) This means we should be polite when we talk to our parents. BS This means we should not take things that do not belong to us. 9. Do not lie about others. (Cup hands around mouth @ 8) and pretend to whisper after if reciting the command.) 10. Do not be greedy. (Point to someone else’s stuff and pretend to be envious.) This means that we should be content with what we 2 have. We should not wish that someone else’s toys or clothes or pets belonged to us. =) 2) These were the commands that God gave to His people. All of these commands are written in the Bible. Review the story by asking the following questions: How did the people prepare to worship the Lord? Who spoke to them? What did the people see and hear on the mountain that showed that God is really great and holy God? What commands did God give them? Where can we find these commands today? Breaker: Before proceeding to the next activity, you may have the children stand up and count from 1 to 10 while clapping or stomping their feet (e.g. “One!” Clap: “One, two!” Clap, clap. “One, two, three!” Clap, clap, clap.). 2 = Scanned with CamScanner —_—~a) RELATION TO LIFE These commands are good because tney come from God. They tell us what makes God happy. They also tell us what would make us happy. Imagine what would happen if everyone obeyed all of God's commands. If all people loved God more than anything, would God be happy? If all children respected their parents, would families be happy? How about if all married couples loved each other and were faithful to each other, would their children be happy? If you were content with what you have and did not envy other kids, would you be happy? Let the children respond after every question. But imagine what happens when we disobey God’s commands. When people lie about each other, steal from each other, and kill each other. When children are greedy and disrespectful to their parents. When parents do not love God and each other. Do you think anyone would be happy? Let, the children answer. God is wise and loving, so all His commands are good. We can only be truly happy when we obey Him. FG \ APPLICATION Do you want to obey God’s commands? Let the children respond. Let’s show how we can obey them. Ask the following questions 2nd tell the children to mime their answers. * How can you show that you love God more than anything? Children can mime reading the Bible, praying, singing praise songs, etc. Explain that when you truly love God, you will want to spend time talking and listening to Him. * What should you do on Sundays? Children can mime attending church, attending Sunday school, resting, etc: How can you show respect for your Parents? You may give more specific questions like, How w Ju Your parents when you coma oreet from school? What should you we when your father asks you to get him a glass of water? RELATION TO LIFE God is the wisest of all. He already knows what will happen tomorrow. He knows what will happen next week. He knows what will happen next year. He knows what will happen when we are grown-up, and when we are very old! God is the One who planned the future. He has prepared a good future for those who love and obey Him. When we trust Him, we do not have to be afraid because He has promised that He will always be with us. God is the most powerful of all, so He can protect us from anything. Even when bad or sad things happen, He will never leave us. And someday, He will take us to live with Him forever, and all the bad and sad things will end. APPLICATION God is pleased when we believe what He says in the Bible about the future. Here is a list of verses in the Bible that talk about what will happe® someday. Distribute the pieces of paper where you printed the references. ‘Wher you go home, ask your parents, OF your older brother/sister, or your yay? 0 read these verses to you. Let's practice trusting God for what will happen. Today is the first day of the week. Let's tell God that we trust Him to take care of us this week and help us meet again next Sunday. Lead the children in prayer. Encourage each of them to express their trust in God's care. They may mention the activities they are planning to do during the week, like going to school, playing with friends, visiting relatives, etc. Thank the Lord for His promise to be with you always, even though you cannot see Him. Him te happens: © LIFE VERSE Open your Bible to Jeremiah 29:11a and fead the verse to the class. Point to the Copy written on the board and have the children read it together. Turn the verse into a song to make it easy to memorize.
