Tech Article - Optimized Use of Power Supply Module

1. The Power Supply Module provides auxiliary 24Vdc power to allow operation and communication with Omega Air Circuit Breakers and MATRIX Protection & Control Units when the main power is off. 2. It has three power output sets that can provide a total of 20.3VA to power the Protection & Control Unit and additional modules like ZSI, DIO, TM, relays, etc. 3. An example is provided showing how to calculate the VA requirements and connect multiple circuit breakers and modules to a single Power Supply Module to provide auxiliary power when main power is off.

Power Supply Module

Optimized use of Power Supply (PS) Module:

All versions of Omega Air Circuit Breakers with MATRIX releases are self- powered. Display (O-LED
type) is a standard feature in MATRIX Protection & Control (P&C) Units (MTX-1.5G Onwards) and it needs
10% of I-frame value to Power-Up through CTs.
If an auxiliary power source of 24Vdc (thru PS Module or any controlled supply source) is available,
display will get Power-Up at NO-load/OFF condition also in these units (MTX-2.5 onwards).

A. Function of Auxiliary Power supply in MATRIX P&CU:

1. It shall be possible to alter protection settings while ACB is in OFF condition through navigation keys.

2. If it is desired to see details of Fault/Event History after the ACB has tripped on Fault. However last trip
record will be available on display without auxiliary power through Query button in P&C Unit.

3. To communicate with P&C Unit while ACB is in OFF condition.

4. For Powering-Up Modules like ZSI, UN-CO, etc.

5. Necessary to build communication between P&C Unit and external modules like REL, TCS, DIO, AO, TM,
EF & REF

Note:
I. For point no.1, 2, 3 & 4 it is not necessary to use PS Module available with L&T only. Any continuous
source of controlled 24V DC can serve the purpose. (Applicable for versions–
MTX2.5/2.5G/3.5/3.5EC/3.5H/4.5)

II. For point no. 5, PS Module available with L&T is must to hardware each & all external module to get
desired features (Applicable in MTX3.5/3.5EC/3.5H/4.5). In this case each MATRIX release needs a PS
Module.

III. Before providing auxiliary power supply to MATRIX P&CU it is necessary to know the VA burden of
MATRIX P&C Unit & Modules for the calculation of total VA demand.

B. CONTINUOUS VA BURDEN DETAILS OF SUPPLEMENTARY MODULES:-

Sr.no. Supplementary Module VA
1 ZSI 1
2 DIO 2
3 TM 0.5
4 RELAY 1
5 TCS 1.5
6 ANALOG 2
7 EL 1.1
8 REF 1
9 UN-CO 6
C. VA BURDEN OF COMMUNICATION MODULES IN VARIOUS COMBINATIONS:-

Combination of Port 1: 200mA Port 2: 650mA

Communication modules
Sr.no.

1 UW-MTX3.5/3.5EC MODBUS 3 1 15 5
2 + METERING PROFIBUS 4 1 12 3

3 ZIGBEE 3 1 15 5

D. VA BURDEN OF SUPPLEMENTARY MODULES IN VARIOUS COMBINATIONS:

Sr.no. Release Supplementary VA No. of PS port to

module Releases be used
1 ZSI 4 1 1 or 2
2 TCS 4.5 1 2
3 UW-MTX3.5/3.5EC
TM 3.5 1 1 or 2
4 +MODBUS MODULE ZSI+TCS 5.4 1 2
5 +METERING ZSI+TM 4.5 1 2
MODULE
6 ZSI+TCS+TM 6 1 2
7 RELAY 4 1 1 or 2
8 ZSI+RELAY 5 1 2

E. Functionality of Power Supply Module:

Power Supply Module have 3 sets of auxiliary power output. Set - 2 & 3’s combined VA
burden is 15.5VA & Set -1 with an additional VA burden of 4.8VA. So, total output power
available from PS Module is 20.3VA.
Note:-
Power output set -2 or 3, has to be loaded first, while connecting P&C Unit &
External Modules with Power Supply Module.
Recommended wire for connection of MATRIX release with PS
Module through AS+/AS- SIC port in ACB is 24AWG ( 7/0.2).

F. EXAMPLE

Let us consider a Panel Board having 5 nos. Omega ACBs of different MATRIX P&C Units
& auxiliary power has to be supplied through PS Module as there is no auxiliary power (24Vdc)
source available–
1. Incomer ACB is with MTX3.5EC + ZSI - 1 no.
2. Outgoing ACBs are with MTX3.5 + Modbus COM + ZSI – 3 nos.

Solution: Total VA requirement of all P&CU & Modules are as follows:

Count
P&CU & Modules Total VA burden
(Nos.)
MTX3.5EC 1 3
MTX3.5+ Modbus COM 3 9
ZSI module 4 4
TOTAL VA 16

Max VA available through PS module:

O/P set 1: 4.8 VA
O/P set 2: 15.6 VA

Connection:
Incomer ACB Outgoing ACBs
Device VA burden Device VA burden
MTX3.5EC : 1 No 3 VA MTX3.5 + COM : 3 Nos 9 VA
ZSI : 1 No 1 VA ZSI : 3 Nos 3 VA
Total 4 VA Total 12 VA
Connect to PS module O/P 1 Connect to PS module O/P 2

So, using only a single PS Module, the above set up can be powered ON.

However, above PS module quantity selection can vary depending on the location/distance of the
modules in the panel as well as the type of module used (refer Point A Note I, II, III)
