Insert Components
The insert assembly consists of a solid plug, an injection nut and a tube or quill selected to meet
the specific injection requirements. For detailed information on solid plugs please refer to Axess
HP Access fitting datasheets. The injection nut length and NPT thread are selected based on the
access fitting height and tube/quill diameter - see below. The tube or quill is mounted into the
injection nut body and must be selected to deliver the necessary volume of fluid to the selected
point in the line based on the line operating pressures and chemical injection pump pressure.
Injection Options: the injection fluid can be drip fed or atomized, though atomization is only
useful for injection into gas filled spaces or treating gas systems. Both methods of injection can
be either top or middle of line, usually referred to as perpendicular and parallel (to line flow)
injection, respectively. Top of line can be specified as flush for pigable lines.
Drip Feed Tubes and Quills: for perpendicular drip feeds an open end tube is used. This method
relies on the natural turbulence in the flow to disperse the chemical feed and may not be suitable
when complete dispersal of a small volume of chemical is needed. Parallel injection uses a
notched quill design at the center of the line which creates an artificial turbulence in the fluid
flow to disperse the treatment chemical more effectively. The term quill is derived from the
diagonally cut end of the tube which resembles a quill pen. As both designs may be used in fast
fluid flows it is necessary to consider the strength and wake frequency of the design. Quill and
tube diameters are otherwise selected to suit the rate of injection. Standard sizes range between
1/4” and 3/4”.
Sampling: it is often necessary to obtain samples of the line fluid for laboratory analysis in
support of the system management. If there is a pressure drop across an open tube type injection
point and the outside pressure is the lower, the system will act as a siphon and allow fluid to be
sampled. Plain end and quill end tubes can be used in this way, although quills are not notched
as the object is to sample the natural flow as accurately as possible.
External Components: the outer end of a tee must be fitted with pressure control equipment
such as a check or shut-off valve as without this there is no pressure barrier. Valves may be
attached to the tee by a threaded nipple, welding, or flange. The plain nipple type tee can also
be used with compression fittings. Usual practice is to fit a shut-off valve at the tee and then
connect the feed or sample line to the valve, enabling the fitting to be isolated as near to the line
as possible. Many injection systems are also fitted with check valves, which provide an additional
barrier and can assist with getting the proper performance from atomizing nozzles. Sophisticated
combined check/isolation valves and double block-and-bleed valves are also available. Because
of the wide range of options, it is only possible to give limited details in this data sheet, please
contact an Axess expert for information specific to your requirement. All access points should be
fitted with a pressure retaining cover that meets the requirements of the location. Please refer
to Axess high pressure access fitting datasheets for details.
Building a System
Step One: Select an access fitting, solid plug, and cover from the appropriate datasheets,
considering the tee style, mounting and material requirements.
Step Three: Select the Quill/Tube/Nozzle configuration and diameter required. Table 2. gives a
guide to the acceptable rate of flow for each tube diameter.
To calculate the tube/quill length, firstly calculate the basic dimension (K) from:
Where:
H = The Access fitting height (inches)
MF = The mating flange height (inches) (for flanged fittings only)
FG = The flange gap allowance 0.06” (for flanged fittings only)
WG = The weld gap allowance 0.06”
P = The solid plug length (2.51” for mechanical, 3.93” for hydraulic)
N = The nut length (inches) as selected from table 1.
Retrievable injection systems typically utilize a 2” high pressure access fitting with integral side
tee in a range of configurations including NPT, welded and flanged (see separate Axess
datasheets).
The Axess Direct Injection system provides an alternate solution allowing the use of non-tee
fittings whilst still maintaining the safety, reliability, and online servicing capability of our tee’d
systems including secondary isolation with pressure retaining cover. These fittings provide the
flexibility to repurpose existing monitoring fittings or allow installation of new injection points at
critical locations where space may be restricted.
Our Access Fittings meet NACE MR0175 (sour service) requirements. NORSOK specification upon
request. PED compliance available.
Seals are provided in PTFE (15% glass filled) and O-rings in Viton as standard however a range of
materials are available for compatibility with the process and checmicals.
Injection Devices
Axess offers a range of injection tubes, quills, and nozzles to suit the injection method, rate and
atomization required details of which can be found in our Chemical Injection datasheets.
Coupon Configurations
Strip coupons are usually mounted in pairs and placed in or partially in the process
flow. Disc coupons are usually mounted flush with the wall of the pipe (or vessel)
so that conditions are as close as possible to those at the process/containment
interface. Scale coupons are strip shaped with several different sized holes so that
scaling tendency can be assessed. Weld coupons are sections of a weld with HAZ
and parent metal that are used to assess preferential weld corrosion. Stressed
coupons have a known amount of bending stress applied by a special mounting
arrangement. They are used to assess susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking.
There are many different materials, dimensions and finishes available. Please
consult an Axess expert for technical and commercial assistance.

The Axess AXHP range of coupon holders are designed for use with our AXHP access systems and
allow the insertion and removal of corrosion coupons in pressurized piping systems up to
10,000psi. The coupon holders are installed through permanently mounted access fittings
allowing installation and replacement of coupons without the requirement to isolate process
pressure avoiding expensive isolation and shutdowns.
Coupon holders are manufactured in 316SS material as standard and lengths are selected to suit
the individual monitoring location.
The two main styles of coupon holder are 3” strip and flush disc. Strip coupon holders can be
used for monitoring at a pre-selected area within the pipe whilst flush disc coupon holders are
ideal from monitoring inline with the pipe wall. Additional coupon holder types including ladder
coupons and multidisc are available for specialist monitoring within multiphase lines.

Bio Probes
Axess-Corrosion offers a range of bio probes for monitoring of
Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) in high and low
pressure systems. MIC often goes undetected in many industrial
systems, but its importance should not be underestimated or
ignored as microorganisms, including bacteria, algae, and fungi can
accelerate corrosion by up to 1000 times. Not monitoring for
Microbiologically induced corrosion can result in the improper use
of corrosion inhibitors and coatings, resulting in significant waste
and increased operating costs whilst not addressing the root
problem. Bio probes offer plant operators a simple and effective
tool for collecting samples for subsequent microbiological analysis
in systems susceptible to MIC.
The most common forms of corrosion associated with MIC include pitting, uniform, crevice, galvanic, and
stress corrosion cracking. Microbiological induced corrosion occurs in virtually every aqueous
environment such as water treatment and sewage handling and treatment plants. MIC can also occur in
oil & gas systems, chemical processing plants, and underground pipelines. Plant operators use chemical
treatment, mainly biocides to kill the corrosion causing bacteria and other microorganisms to prevent or
reduce corrosion. Physical cleaning or mechanical cleaning can control the effects of microbiological
induced corrosion however the use of bio-probes can increase treatment effectiveness through
verification and adjustment.
Axess bio probes provide an economical and safe means of collecting sessile bacteria samples deposited
onto the metal surface of bio studs installed into the process. The Axess bio probe houses five bio studs
which are exposed simultaneously to the process being monitored. When a sample is required for analysis
the holder is retrieved from the line and one of the bio studs removed. A replacement stud is installed in
the vacant space and the probe is reinstalled into the line. The next time a sample is required a different
stud is retrieved and replaced. Following this pattern of replacement allows frequent sampling intervals
whilst increasing exposure time for each stud.
Early detection and treatment is key to controlling microbiologically influenced corrosion once it has
infected the system. Once the microorganisms have formed a biofilm, they become more resistant to
biocides and can rapidly grow if not detected and controlled.
The use of ER (electrical resistance) probes is a proven, established industry technique which
operates on the principle that the electrical resistance of a metal element will increase as the
cross-sectional area decreases due to corrosion or erosion. Axess ER probes utilize a second
element, called the reference element. Manufactured from the same material as the
measurement element, the reference element is stored inside the body of the probe, where it is
shielded from the process and used to auto-compensate for changes in electrical resistance due
to other factors such as temperature.
Unlike some other technologies, Axess ER probes operate independently of the process
properties and can therefore be used in almost any environment.
Axess offers ER probes in a variety of configurations to suit almost all monitoring locations and
processes. Wire Loop probes offer increased sensitivity but shorter life span. Tubular element
probes are more robust, have longer lifespans and are ideally suited to monitoring center of line.
Flush probes can be installed with the element positioned in line with the pipe wall and are
therefore suited to monitoring top and bottom of the line where localized corrosion may occur.
Multiple mounting options are offered for both high and low pressure systems with many of
these being retrievable for maintenance and replacement under normal operating conditions
using Axess retrieval equipment.
