Sample Writing Task 1 - Student

The line graph shows the amount of goods transported in the UK from 1974 to 2002 by road, water, rail, and pipeline in million tonnes. Road transportation saw the largest increase over this period, starting at 70 million tonnes and reaching nearly 100 million tonnes by 2002. Water and rail both began at 40 million tonnes in 1974, though water increased steadily to over 60 million tonnes while rail decreased to a low of 40 million tonnes in 1998 before increasing again to 40 million tonnes in 2002. Pipeline transportation steadily increased to over 20 million tonnes by 1994 before leveling off. Overall, transportation by road, water, and pipeline grew during this period while rail remained mostly constant or decreased.

The line graphs illustrates the amount of goods transported in the UK with (by) four types of way

(methods) which are by road, water, rail, and pipeline from 1974 to 2002. The amount of goods is
shown in the form of weight million tonnes. (The measurement is in million tonnes.)

Overall, the amount of goods that were transported using road, water, and pipeline always increases
from 1974 to 2022 (increased during the period, except for the one using rail which remained the
same). Meanwhile, it decreased and stayed at the same point by using the rail. (Road was the most
popular mean of transporting goods, so did pipeline where it served as the opposite.)

The (Transporting goods by) road has the biggest and highest amount of goods that were transported
during those period of years. (The biggest amount of goods was mostly transported by road which
started at around 70 million tonnes and ended up at slightly under 100 million tonnes in 2002.) It
reached the highest among the others in 2002 with a number of almost 100 million tonnes. However,
pipeline always grow until the year of 1994. Then, it remains constant until the end of the period
with over 20 million tonnes. (In contrast, though pipeline increased by almost 20 million tonnes, it
stayed as the least popular method of transport.)

In addiition, water and rail have the same starting point in 1974 with the amount of 40 million
tonnes. In 1986 to 1990, it remains constant with 60 million tonnes, but then experienced a slight
drop in 1998 until it rose again in 2002 with the reaching point of slightly over 60 million tonnes.
(Transport by water, went up to around 60 million tonnes in 1982 and remained stable until in
dropped a little in between 1994 and 1998, but in 2002 it rose and reached slightly over 60 million
tonnes.) On the other hand, in 1998 the amount of goods that were transported by rail dropped until
it increased again in 2002 with an amount of 40 million tonnes. (the amount of goods that were
transported by rail dropped and reached its lowest point in 1998, but it went back up to its initial
position in the final year.)
