Chapter 3
(Approximation and Estimation)

Name :

Class :

I should be able to:

1. Round off numbers to a required number of decimal place
2. State the number of significant figures

Activity 1:

Write down the place value of each digit of the given number.
932 478.765

Activity 2:
Rule of rounding:
1) If the number is followed by 5, 6, 7, 8, or 9, round the number up.
2) If the number is followed by 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4, round the number down.

Round off 275 to the nearest 10.

2 7 5

Step 1:
Underline the digit in the tens place.
Step 2:
Circle the next digit on its right.
If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the digit in the tens place.
Step 3:
Put a zero in the ones place.
Activity 3:
1. Round off 273 to the nearest 10.
Answer:
2. Correct 96.482 to
a) 1 decimal place
b) The nearest whole number
Answer:

Activity 4:
Significant figures is used to reflect the degree of accuracy.

Five rule to identify digits which are significant

Rule 1: All non-zero digits are significant

The number 7258 has .. .. significant figures

Rule 2: All zeros between non-zero digits are significant

The number 32.047 has .. .. significant figures

Rule 3: In a decimal, all zeros after non-zero digits are significant

The number 41.0320 has .. .. significant figures

Rule 4: In a decimal, all zeros before non-zero digits are NOT significant

The number 0.021 has .. .. significant figures

Rule 5: In whole numbers, the zero at the end may or may not be significant. It depends on
how the number are approximated

Rounding Off to a Given Number of Significant Figures

Round off each of the following to the number of significant figures as given in brackets.

1) 8 982 (2 s.f.)

8 9 8 2

Step 1:
Determine the s.f. starting from the left (2 s.f.). Step 3:
(Rule 1) Put a zero to indicate the 2nd s.f. (Rule 5)
Step 2: Step 4:
Circle the next digit on its right. Put two zero. (Rule 5)
If it is 5 or more, add 1 to the previous digit
Activity 5:
Round off each of the following to the number of significant figures as given in brackets.

1. 6396 (2 s.f.)

2. 6396 (3 s.f.)

3. 0.9999 (3 s.f.)

4. 0.003 018 5 (4 s.f.)

Activity 6:
Application of rounding off

1. Ani says that 8.395 is equal to 8.4 when rounded off to 2 decimal places because she thinks that
8.40 is same as 8.4. Do you agree? Explain your answer.
Answer:
8.395 = (the value is number of 2 decimal places)

Note: Number of 1 decimal place is different with number of 2 decimal places.

I do not agree.
2. Farhan says that 26.97 is equal to 27 when rounded off to 1 decimal place because he thinks that
27.0 is the same as 27. Do you agree? Explain your answer.

3. A truck carries 150 ceramic tiles and 225 marble tiles. The mass of a ceramic tile is 1.87 kg and
the mass of a marble tile is 4.63 kg. Calculate the total mass of the tiles carried by the truck,
giving your answer correct to the nearest 0.1 kg.
Answer:
I know
A truck carries .. .. ceramic tiles. The mass of a ceramic tile is .. .. kg.
A truck carries .. .. marble tiles. The mass of a marble tile is .. .. kg.
I don’t know
The total mass of the tiles carried by the truck (correct to the nearest 0.1 kg).
Answer
Mass of ceramic tiles = 150 ×… = kg
Mass of marble tiles = … × 4.63 = kg
The total mass of the tiles carried by the truck =+¿
= kg
= kg (to the nearest 0.1 kg)
