Introduction
This year long course requires you to do an independent research study on a topic of your choice.
Topics may be drawn from the broad area of media and communication. The choice of topic must
be something you are interested in since you will have to live with it for the rest of the year. The
area you choose must also be an area you have the intellectual capability to grapple with.

Research Supervisors
You will be allocated a supervisor from within the department at the beginning of the research
process. She/he will guide you and ensure that your study is successfully completed and there are
no problems or plagiarism. In case of proven plagiarism the student will be disqualified. It is your
responsibility to maintain regular contact with your supervisor, this will ensure any problems or
difficulties will be dealt with at an early stage and keep you on track in the right direction.

Research time schedule

Meeting of deadlines will ensure that you do not fall behind in your research paper. Part of the
training in the independent research paper is to learn how to operate within deadlines.

Working during recess and holidays

This is an independent piece of work and you will therefore be expected to continue your work
throughout the stipulated period including holiday and recess periods.

Research paper specifications

The final report should be between 50 and 60 pages. Standard format for presentation should be
followed.

Research is an enjoyable experience and it is our hope that you enjoy this year’s research project.
The best way to ensure that it is worthwhile is to do things on time and not leave activities
unattended until the last minute.
