Action Research

This document outlines an action research plan to help struggling readers at a school in the Philippines. It identifies learning gaps among pupils, particularly in reading skills. An intervention using the Marungko Approach and repetitive reading strategy was implemented thrice weekly. Data was gathered using assessment tools to profile participants and measure the effect of the intervention on reading abilities over time. The plan is to use the Marungko Approach throughout to help improve participants' reading skills from their initial levels.

I. Context and Rationale:

This school year in person classes is being implemented. Various challenges
with regards to child’s learning were discovered. One primary challenge we are
facing right now as educators are the learning gaps among our pupils. One of
which is their reading skills. As we all know reading is a fundamental factor that
plays an important role in learning. As I assessed my pupils in the opening of
classes I found out that I have several pupils who belong to the struggling
readers. They don’t even know the sounds of the alphabets. Some can read
only CVC words and some knows how to read but they do not understand
what they are reading. This is the main reason why I decided to conduct my
first action research and my focus is to help these struggling learners. I know
the road I am taking is not easy, however I am very much willing and prepared
to help them in the best way that I can.

II. Action Research Questions:

 What is the profile of the respondents in this study?
 What are the factors that highly affected their reading skills?
 What is the effect of using a reading tool known as Marungko Approach
and Repetitive reading in their reading skills?

III. Proposed Innovation, Intervention and Strategy

As a result of my initial assessment to my pupils I have come up with a
strategy to help address the needs of my learners. I started my reading
intervention last September and I use the Marungko Approach and Repetitive
reading strategy. With their parents’ consent, thrice a week after class hours I
let them stay in the classroom and conduct my reading remediation with them.
I started first as a group and then later one on one. I also provided a handout of
the Marungko reading tool so that they can also continue learning how to read
it at home.

A. Participants and/ or Other Sources of Data Information

The number of participants in this study are six pupils. Five are boys and one is a
girl. One of the participants has an age range of twelve years old, the rest are nine to
ten years old.

B. Data Gathering Methods

The process of gathering my data are the following: I started first using the ASER
and PHIL-IRI tool in reading since this is the tool being suggested that we are going
to use to assess our learners in their reading level. Then, as a result of that
assessment I have studied their reading abilities and what kind of reading tool am I
going to use that is most appropriate in their reading level. Then, I made a profiling
among these pupils as to which reading tool they learns best and enjoyed the
most. Learning while having fun at the same time.

C. Data Analysis Plan

Basically, I plan to use the Marungko Approach for the whole duration of
this action research since this is the best reading tool for them. From the time I
started my reading remediation up to the present there is a significant difference
already in their reading ability.
