Of the many unexplained phenomenon which continue to puzzle scientists and laymen like, the corn circles of
Southern England remain one of the most mysterious. These perfect-formed circles, which, when they see from the air
appear to have been inscribed with an enormous carving tool, seem to be a part of significant message; so far,
however, nobody managed to decipher it, and it is doubtful if anyone will ever be able to. But the main question –
how the circles came to be there – are just as far from being solved. Although several people have come forward
claiming to have made the circles ourselves, scientists declare that it would be impossible for even a large group to
create shapes of such precision on so a large scale. These circles have become one of the strongest arguments in
support of the existing of intelligent extra-terrestrial life forms .

IV Choose the best word or phrase to complete the following passage : Communication
(37)A The truth about what really happened B Can mathematics prove aliens exist? C An unlikely meeting
D Have other life forms visited Earth? E Is the Earth unique? I How has our thinking changed?
F Your chance to be famous G Finding a way to communicate H We are not alone
IS THERE LIFE ON OTHER PLANETS?
Scientists are increasingly convinced of the existence of other intelligent life forms. Where should we be looking
-1------Ever since people realised the Earth was just a tiny part of the universe, they have wondered about the existence
of other intelligent life forms. Early on, many people thought that intelligent life might be found on Mars or Venus, our two
nearest planets Now that we have sent unmanned spacecraft to these planets, we know that no intelligent life existed
there .
-2------The Earth's position in relation to the Sun makes it the only planet in our own solar system which is obviously
capable of sustaining life. If we were nearer the Sun, there would be a thicker layer of cloud around us; this would trap
heat, causing the temperature to rise. Within a short time, the Earth would turn into a desert, completely unsuitable for
life. If we were further away from the Sun, there would not be enough heat to prevent water from freezing. The polar
ice caps would expand, .and the sea level would fall. Before long, the Earth would become an Arctic wasteland.
3--------Many people claim to have seen unidentified flying objects (UFOs), proving that alien life must exist. Most scientists,
however, believe UFO sightings to be imaginary or to have a rational explanation. The formation of crop circles (strange
patterns that appear in fields of wheat) in different parts of the world was once claimed to be evidence of alien activity.
Now these circles are thought to be either a natural phenomenon or the work of hoaxes. And the scientists certainly do
not believe some people's claims to have been abducted by aliens.
4--------Ironically, the US government is to blame for the biggest UFO story of all. In 1947, a mysterious crash took place
near a government airbase in New Mexico. For many years, the US government denied that anything strange has taken
place. This led some people to conclude that the government was covering up evidence of an alien spacecraft that had
crashed. Recently, more information has been released. It turns out that the wreckage was part of a top-secret aircraft
and nothing to do with UFOs at all.
5---------Sceptics dismiss the idea of other life forms as complete nonsense. Frank Drake, an astronomer, has worked out
an equation to estimate the number of civilisations in out galaxy. The equation is complicated and relies on a lot of
guesswork. Even so, it is taken seriously by scientists, who have calculated that there may be several billion
civilisations in our galaxy alone.Telescopeshavedetected1,000million galaxies in the universe, so the probability of
intelligent life becomes extremely high.
6----------The best proof of life beyond Earth would be to come face to face with aliens from another planet. But unless
they visit us, this won't happen. Space travel to even the nearest star, Alpha Centauri, is at present totally impossible
because of the distance. Modern spacecraft travel about 36,000 kph. At this speed, it would take 12,000 years to
reach Alpha Centauri. We might like the idea of encountering aliens, but it is unrealistic to expect it to happen.
7--------So scientists are pinning their hopes on exchanging messages with alien civilisations, if they exist. They are
scanning the universe for radio waves sent as signals from aliens. However, there are a number of problems with this
approach. How do we know a radio wave is a signal? If it is, how do we decode what it means? Moreover, the message
may have taken centuries to reach us; any reply we send will take just as long
-8-------For many years. Frank Drake's Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SET!) Institute in California has
been monitoring the radio signals we receive from outer space for signs of artificial origin. When the US government cut
the Institute's funding, SETI started a project involving the personal computers of people around the world, called
SETI@home. To link up, you register with the SETI website, download the necessary software and a small section of the
universe appears on your screen. This is monitored for signals while your computer is not in use. If your computer helps, to
detect extra-terrestrial life, yo u ca n be na med a s a co - discoverer.

B These days in business, people have to face many challenging questions when designing and implementing new
projects in undeveloped areas of the countryside. One issue which has to be faced is whether it is possible to introduce new
technology without destroying the local environment.
Economic (1) ___and environmental conservation are often seen as natural enemies. It is unfortunate that in the past this
has often been true, and it has been necessary to choose between (2) _____the project or protecting the environment.
However, by taking environmental considerations (3) ___at an early stage in a project, companies can significantly reduce
any impacts on local plants and animals.
For example, in southern Africa, a company called CEL was asked to put up 410 km of a power transmission line without
disturbing the rare birds which inhabit that area. The project was carried out with (4) __disturbance last summer. What may
surprise many business people is the fact that this consideration for local wildlife did not in any way (5) __down the project.
Indeed, the necessary advance planning (6) _with local knowledge and advanced technology, (7) __that the project was
actually completed ahead of schedule. CEL was contracted to finish the job by October and (8) __to do so two months
earlier. CEL is one of those companies which is (9) __________ to the principle of environmental conservation. Many other
companies have yet to be (10) __________ of the importance of balancing the needs of people with those of the
environment. However, it may be the only realistic way forward.

C For many years, scientists have speculated that the cataclysmic impact of an asteroid with the earth was responsible for
the demise of the dinosaurs approximately 65 million years ago. Previous discoveries and results have hinted that an
asteroid two kilometers in diameter struck the Yucatan peninsula in Eastern Mexico. This impact, stronger than one
thousand nuclear explosions, is speculated to have cast a cloud of dust and debris into the atmosphere, covering the entire
surface of the earth and blocking out the sun and consequently lowering the surface temperature of the earth.
With such a radical change in the earth’s environment, scientists believe that over 90% of all animal and plant species
were eradicated. Only after millions of years did plants and animals even begin to recover. But, the reign of the dinosaurs
had ended and the age of mammals had begun.
The crucial link that has held this theory together has been the element iridium. Iridium is not commonly found on either
the surface of the earth or inside the crust. It is more commonly found in asteroids or meteorites throughout the solar
system. Scientists have hypothesized that after the asteroid impacted the earth, an even layer of iridium sediment settled
over the global and eventually became part of its surface. The theory, of course, has depended on the discovery of such an
existing layer of iridium.
Unfortunately, scientists have never been able to offer absolute proof that this asteroid impact ever occurred. Recently,
however, a discovery may go a long way toward validating these scientists’ theories. In 1996, a team of marine biologists
excavated samples of rock from the floor of the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Bermuda. Found thousands of meters
below the sea, these samples contain iridium similar to those found in the Yucatan peninsula thousands of kilometers away.
At first, scientists were skeptical whether the samples were from the same time period. But since carbon dating placed them
to 65 million years ago, their doubts were quickly alleviated. Since then, many of the other theories for the demise of the
dinosaur have been finally laid to rest

D Matching headings and completing summary: MOBILE PHONE AND DRIVING
A.........Though once perceived a luxury, cell phones have become a common possession over the last ten years or so.
Due to modern day technology and public demand cell phones have been made affordable to most. However, one of the
most controversial topics of today is whether or not we should be using our cell phones whilst driving. Does it pose a
danger to ourselves and other drivers? Or doesn’t it make any difference to the likelihood of an accident.
B.--------Several countries around the world have already imposed a national law with heavy infringements. More recently
the UK, Australia and Finland have joined the ranks of countries opposing this very hazardous act, with Ireland imposing
the harshest penalties on the continent (a third offence can mean 3 months imprisonment). Also in Europe, the
Netherlands is fining offenders 2000 Euros and 2 weeks in jail.
C.--------This dangerous distraction contributes largely to motor vehicle accidents and the statistics are increasing daily as
we continue to take our eyes off the road to call or even more dangerously text. Research by road safety groups suggests
speaking on a phone whilst driving increases your chances of an accident, increasing to nine times more likely when
texting. Time and again, in study after study replicated across the world, the use of a cell phone by the driver has been
proven, beyond any sense of reasonable doubt, to dramatically increase the probability of a motor vehicle crash.
D.---------In New Zealand, a proposal made by a previous Labor led Government suggests a $ 150 fine and 27 demerit
points for any person using a cell phone whilst driving, although the Ministry of Transport is still preparing a report based
on public consultation. Although this is only a pending idea, the government knows this will be a difficult infringement to
police but a start needs to be made and people need to understand the consequences of what potentially could happen. It
is a common misconception that hands free kits are safe to use, but research conducted by Waikato University has
proven that these can be equally as dangerous as hand held phones.
E. -----On one hand, using a cell phone whilst driving has become an integral part of our lives and is going to be a hard
habit to kick. But it has been proven that our reaction time is never fast enough when confronted with a road hazard, but if
you are having a conversation at the same time it will slow your reaction time by even more. Most people find it takes 2
and a half seconds to react in a dangerous situation but if you are on the phone you can add another 2 seconds onto that.
Your attention is divided; part of you concentrates on your conversation, the other on driving. The demands of the
conversation and the road are competing, therefore making it a cognitive distraction as well physical as you are removing
one hand from the steering wheel to hold the phone. On the other hand, an American radio host suggested that banning
cell phones whilst driving was taking it a step too far, “if we ban cell phones, what’s next? No billboards, coffee drinking, or
CD players?” The host agreed that texting whilst driving was a danger but phoning was not.
F.-------Many people agreed with him in saying that texting was a definite hazard as the act of looking down would lead
your eyes off the road. However, doesn't holding a conversation while driving seems just as distracting as eating food or
reaching for a CD? Accidents were happening decades before the cell phone was introduced so should we be taking this
matter so seriously?
G.----------Obviously opinions will differ on this matter, and it will always remain a debatable issue. A long list of countries
seems to be following the trend and imposing a law against cell phones on the road, but there is still and even longer list
yet to follow. Lack of data leaves uncertain results but it seems research is ongoing and surveys and tests are being
carried out on a regular basis to reach some kind of conclusion as to just how dangerous and potentially fatal this habit
may be.
The Reading passage has seven paragraphs A-G. Choose the correct heading for paragraphs B-G from the list of
headings below. Write the correct number i-x in boxes 1-6:
