Circulation

The document discusses open and closed circulatory systems, as well as single and double circulatory systems. A single circulatory system involves blood passing through the heart once per cycle, while a double circulatory system involves blood passing through the heart twice per cycle. The double circulatory system allows mammals to efficiently deliver oxygen to tissues throughout the body.

Circulatory system

A system of connected tubes

“vessels” and, a pump
“heart”.
Mammals, as plants, are
large organisms; diffusion
alone wouldn’t be enough to
deliver the nutrients to the
inner parts of the body, and
that’s why we need a
circulatory system.
Open vs closed circulatory
system.
Open system

The blood can leave the

blood vessels.
Closed circulatory system

The blood never leaves the vessels.

There’s a single closed system, and a double closed system.

Single closed circulation
The blood enters the heart once,
to complete one cycle.

The blood leaves the heart

thought a single ventricle

The blood passes through the

lungs, gets oxygenated, then
passes through the body, getting
deoxygenated

The blood returns to the heart,

through a single atrium, and then
to the single ventricle.
The single circulation would be fine for animals with
low metabolic rate, needing less oxygen delivery, like
fish.

If that was the case in mammals, the blood traveling

through the lungs would lose a lot of pressure and
speed.

When the blood has reached the rest of the body, nor
the pressure, neither the speed of the blood is enough
to deliver the oxygen to the body cells.

This problem is overcame by having a double

circulation.
Double circulatory system
The blood enters the heart twice, to
complete one cycle.

The blood leaves the right side of the heart,

thought the right ventricle, reaching the
lungs, to get oxygenated.

The blood returns from the lungs, to the

left atrium “this is once entering”

The blood leaves the left side of the heart,

through the left ventricle, to the rest of the
body, to deliver the oxygen.

The deoxygenated blood returns to the

right atrium “this is the second time”.

And then the blood reaches the right

ventricle again. “Cycle completed”
Note that the double
circulation can be divided
into a systemic “to the
body”, and a pulmonary
“to the lungs” circulations.

It can be also divide to an

oxygenated “ left “, and
a deoxygenated “right”
circulation.
Advantages of a double
circulatory system
The double circulation allows the blood to get a pump
and reach the lungs at a high pressure.

The blood pass through the heart, after returning from

the lungs, to get another pump, increasing the pressure
before reaching the rest of the body.

This makes the blood reach the lungs and the body, with
a pressure high enough, to allow the oxygenation and
the lungs and, oxygenated blood to reach all body cells.
