Tutorial - 03 - Solution - Slope Deflection

This document contains the solutions to three questions regarding the analysis of beams using the slope-deflection method. [1] For each beam, the moments are determined using the slope-deflection equations derived from the flexibility method. [2] The equilibrium equations are then written and solved to determine the slopes and moments at each joint. [3] The reactions are calculated and the shear force and bending moment diagrams are drawn. Detailed calculations are shown for each step of the analysis.

QUESTION 1: For the beam in Fig Q1 below with constant EI:

a) Determine the moments using slope-deflection method
b) Draw the bending moment and shear force diagram.

SOLUTION
Step 1: Obtain FEM

F WL 60 × 6 F
MAB =− =− = −45kN m = −MBA
8 8
From FEM table, we observe that this is 4th case with a = 0 and b = 0.5L
w L2 2 2 3 1 4

F
MBC = − 2 b − Lb + b = −0.05729wL2 = −41.25kN m
L 2 3 4
3
5 × 63 12 6

F wb L b
−MCB = 2 − =− − = 18.75kN m
L 3 4 122 3 4
Step 2: Obtain Slope Deflection Equations
WE note that θA = 0
2EI
MAB = − [θB ] − 45 = −0.333EIθB − 45
6
2EI
MBA =− [2θB ] + 45 = −0.667EIθB + 45
6
2EI
MBC =− [2θB + θC ] − 41.25 = −0.333EIθB − 0.1666EIθC − 41.25
12
2EI
MCB =− [θB + 2θC ] + 18.75 = −0.166EIθB − 0.333EIθC + 18.75
12
Step 3: Obtain Equilibrium Equations
Joint B: MBA + MBC = 0

− 1.0EIθB − 0.166EIθC + 3.75 = 0 (eqn Q1a)

Joint C: In order to evaluate this, observe that the effect of the overhang can be
replaced by introducing a moment at the end as shown in below.
Joint C: MCB = 75 The sign
convention in
FEM table shows
− 0.166EIθB − 0.333EIθC + 18.75 = 75 clockwise
∴ − 0.166EIθB − 0.333EIθC − 56.25 = 0 (eqn Q1b) moments as
positive!!!

Step 4: Solve the equations and get moments

EIθB = 34.8, EIθC = −186.1

Thus

MAB = −56.6kN m, MBA = 21.8kN m, MBC = −21.8kN m, MCB = 75kN m

Step 5: Obtain reactions and draw SFD and BMD

−21.8 + 75 30 × 3
