SEGDEN:
Threading through Horizons
with Ignited Infinite Potentials
Education serves as a guiding light and source of strength to every individual and to the whole
nation. It is the foundation which dreams are built upon and where aspirations take shape. And in the
face of limitless adversities, such education opens roads of countless possibilities. As learners turn
the tassel from left to right, the boundless realm of possibilities unfolds without a predetermined path
or guarantee of direction.
In the depths of fear and self-doubt, it is always a challenge to find assurance. Urdaneta City
University has stood with its uncertainties and is now, still igniting the flame of the quality of education
for almost 60 years. It has never been dimmed and it enjoins everyone to witness its brimming.
To our graduates, we recognize that your academic journey has been blotted with numerous
trials and hurdles. Remember that those who take quality education will always be challenged. We are
proud and honored; you did great there. Your inner strength is preserved and grew.
Now are you are set to foot out from our Alma Mater, know that after you braved college for
four years or more is just the tip of the iceberg of greater ventures and career pursuits — finding
employment, establishing financial stability, building meaningful relationships, and discovering a
daunting path of adulthood.
The battleground in your hands is expanding wider than you might think of. There will be no
immediate job opportunities and job mismatches will not recognize your grades from major subjects.
The ones who helped in your education or those who were just mere acquaintances could press
expectations from you. Or worse, your struggle within could make things even harder. But remember,
what is limiting you to go further is your key to igniting countless potentials within.
Think that there is no existing box at all, no barriers at all.
Urdaneta City University has witnessed the undying spirit within you. This remarkable resilience
and aspiration led the academe to celebrate its 71st Commencement Exercises with the theme,
“SEGDEN: Threading through Horizons with Ignited Infinite Potentials.” Our 2023 graduates are
enjoined to “segden,” an Iloko term of “to fuel” or “to ignite,” their career potentials in pursuing greater
possibilities in the world. “Segden” also encapsulates the unwavering determination of true UCUians to
rise above mediocrity, refusing the odds to extinguish the brilliance that burns within.
Dear graduates, the potential within you is infinite. Let that resonate and reach the horizons.
Your limitations only stop when you put off the fire within. But if you keep igniting yourselves, you can
pioneer change that the world has never seen - breaking societal norms, prejudices, and stigmas.
May the radiant flames of the UCU spirit continue to burn brightly within you as you venture forth
into a future filled with infinite possibilities.
“Sidgengam ti dalan a agturong ti narimat a bigat.” Ignite the path that leads to a bright future.

A MILLION DREAMS
by Hugh Jackman, Michelle Williams,
and Ziv Zaifman
(Graduation Song)
I close my eyes and I can see I don’t care, I don’t care if they call us
A world that’s waiting up for me crazy
That I call my own Run away to a world that we design
Through the dark, through the door
Through where no one’s been before Every night I lie in bed
But it feels like home The brightest colors fill my head
A million dreams are keeping me awake
They can say, they can say it all sounds I think of what the world could be
crazy A vision of the one I see
They can say, they can say I’ve lost my A million dreams is all it’s gonna take
mind A million dreams for the world we’re
I don’t care, I don’t care, so call me crazy gonna make
We can live in a world that we design
However big, however small
‘Cause every night I lie in bed Let me be part of it all
The brightest colors fill my head Share your dreams with me
A million dreams are keeping me awake You may be right, you may be wrong
I think of what the world could be But say that you’ll bring me along
A vision of the one I see To the world you see
A million dreams is all it’s gonna take To the world I close my eyes to see
A million dreams for the world we’re I close my eyes to see
gonna make
Every night I lie in bed
There’s a house we can build The brightest colors fill my head
Every room inside is filled A million dreams are keeping me awake
With things from far away A million dreams, a million dreams
The special things I compile I think of what the world could be
Each one there to make you smile A vision of the one I see
On a rainy day A million dreams is all it’s gonna take
A million dreams for the world we’re
They can say, they can say it all sounds gonna make
crazy
They can say, they can say we’ve lost our For the world we’re gonna make
minds
