Mathematics7 Quarter1 Module3 Week3
Learning Competencies
The learner represents the absolute value of a number on a number line as the
distance of a number from 0. (M7NS-lc-1)
Objectives
The learner illustrates the absolute value of a number on a number line.
Let’s Recall
A. Write the integer that is represented by each point.
E A C D B
1) 𝐴 4) 𝐷
2) 𝐵 5) 𝐸
3) 𝐶
Let’s Understand
The absolute value of a number is the distance of a number from zero in the
number line regardless of its direction. Hence, it is never negative. In symbols, we
write these as follows:
|−6| = 6 |−10| = 10 |−3| = 3
|6| = 6 |10| = 10 |3| = 3
From the examples above, the absolute value of a positive number is the
number itself while the absolute value of a negative number is its opposite which is a
positive number.
Examples:
a. |−4| = 4
b. |12| = 12

Draw a number line. From zero, count 5 units to right and 5 units to the left.
Therefore, the values of 𝑥 are 5 and −5.

MATHEMATICS7-QUARTER1-WEEK3
Learning Competencies
The learner performs fundamental operations on integers. (M7NS-lc-d-1)
Objectives
The learner performs addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of
integers.
Let’s Recall
Find the value of the following.
1) |25 − 6| 4) |3| + |−10| − |−11|
2) |15 + 3| + |−8| 5) (|−13| + |3 × 4|) ÷ |5|
3) |−8| ÷ |−8| + |−4|
Let’s Understand
There are different ways of performing the fundamental operations on integers
but be sure that we follow the rules for every operation.
❖ Addition of Integers
Rules in Adding Integers
1) To add integers with the same signs, add their absolute values and copy
the common sign.
Examples:
a. 4 + 9 = |4| + |9| b. (−3) + (−2) = −(|−3| + |−2|)
= 4+9 = −(3 + 2)
= 13 = −5
2) To add integers with different signs, subtract their absolute values and copy
the sign of the integer with the greater absolute value.
Examples: a. (−8) + 5 = |−8| − |5|
3
MATHEMATICS7-QUARTER1-WEEK3
=8−5
= −3 Since, −8 has a greater absolute value then,
the sum is negative.
b. 19 + (−10) = |19| − |−10|
= 19 − 10
=9 Since, 19 has a greater absolute value then, the
sum is positive.
❖ Subtraction of Integers
Since we know that Subtraction is the opposite of Addition then we can state the
rule in subtraction as adding the opposite of the subtrahend to the minuend. In
symbols,
𝒂 − 𝒃 = 𝒂 + (−𝒃), where 𝒂 represents the minuend and 𝒃 represents the
subtrahend.
Steps in subtracting integers:
1) Copy the minuend.
2) Change the operation to addition.
3) Change the sign of the subtrahend.
4) Apply the rules in adding integers.
Examples:
a. 8 − 4 = 8 + (−4) c. (−7) − (−3) = (−7) + 3
=4 = −4
b. 10 − (−5) = 10 + 5 d. (−9) − (−8) = (−9) + 8
= 15 = −1
❖ Multiplication of Integers
Rules in Multiplying Integers
1) The product of two integers with the same sign is positive. In symbols,
(+ ) × (+ ) = + ; (− ) × ( − ) = +
2) The product of two integers with different signs is negative. In symbols,
(+ ) × (− ) = − ; (− ) × ( + ) = −
Examples:
a. 8 × 2 = 16 c. (−5) × 3 = −15
b. (−3) × (−6) = 18 d. 1 × (−12) = −12
❖ Division of Integers
The rules in multiplication of integers are the same in division.
1) The quotient of two integers with the same sign is positive. That is,
(+ ) ÷ (+ ) = + ; (− ) ÷ ( − ) = +
2) The quotient of two integers with different signs is negative. That is,
(+ ) ÷ (− ) = − ; (− ) ÷ ( + ) = −
Examples:
a. 54 ÷ 6 = 9 c. 27 ÷ (−3) = −9
b. (−35) ÷ (−7) = 5 d. (−18) ÷ 9 = −2
