QUARTER 1 - MODULE 6
MELC13 -14

LIONS’ SHARE
Part I

Introduction

Hi, there Kids! Good day and Mabuhay!! Your Math teacher had
prepared a module for you! Hope you enjoy it!

This module is specially made for you. It presents different activities on how
to solve the division of decimals. It also consists of many activities involving
divisions of decimals

In this module, you will learn how to tackle and solve mathematical
sentence, word problems involving division of whole numbers by decimal up
to 2 decimal places and vice versa, and division of decimals/mixed decimals
up to 2 decimal places, divide decimal up to 4 decimal places by 0.1, 0.01,
0.001and divide decimal up to 2 decimal places by 10,100, and 1 000
mentally.

Dividing Decimals is similar to dividing whole numbers, except for the way
we handle the decimal point. When we divide decimals, we change the
divisor to a whole number by moving the decimal point to the right. Then, we
move the decimal point of the dividend up to the same number of places to
the right and divide the resultant numbers in the normal way as we do regular
division.

Let us learn more about the division of decimals by reading the content
given below, which will help us to understand this better.

Decimals are a part of the extended number system to express tenths,

hundredths, thousandths, and so on. Working with decimals may seem a bit
complex but the various operations using decimal numbers is quite similar to
the operations using whole numbers. A decimal number has a whole
number part and the fractional part separated by a dot. The digits following
the decimal point show a value smaller than one.

Pretest

Always remember the following.

To divide whole numbers by decimals, change your divisor into a whole

number by moving the decimal point to the right until the divisor becomes a
whole number and so with the dividend. In case the dividend is a whole
number then put or annex 0 depends on how many times you move the
decimal in your divisor.

PRESENTATION/DISCUSSION

MELC 13: A. Dividing whole numbers by decimals up to 2 decimal places.

Discussion/Illustrative Examples
Directions: Read the word problem and solve.

Christopher is a very thoughtful teacher who bought 84 pieces of

sweet candies. He divided the sweet candies among his pupils. If each
pupil will get 1.2 candies, how many pupils does the teacher have?
2
What is asked?

How many pupils does the teacher have?

Given:

84 sweet candies and 1.2 candies of each pupil

Divide 84 ÷ 1.2

Suppose we wanted to divide the whole number 84 by the decimal 1.2. We

would first count how many places we need to move the decimal in the
divisor to the right in 1.2 to get a whole number. This would be one place
because if we move the decimal one place to the right, we get the whole
number 12 and so with the dividend by an annex of 0 depends on how many
times you move in the divisor.

_______ _______
1.2) 84 12) 840

Operation used: Division

Mathematical sentence: _____

12 ) 840

Solution: Proceed using the long method of division

___70_
12 ) 840
- 84_

X answer= 70 pupils

B. Dividing decimals by whole numbers up to 2 decimal places.

The Ayento family drove cross country on a 4,615.8 mile trip in 49 days. Find the
average number of miles driven per day.

Explore and Discover:

Analysis: We need to divide 4,615.8 by 49 to solve this problem.

In the division of decimal/mixed decimals by a whole number, never mind the

decimal in the dividend. Proceed division as a whole number and affix
decimal point just right above the decimal point in the quotient.

What is asked?
The average number of miles driven per day.

C: Dividing decimals/mixed decimals up to 2 decimal places

Multiply the divisor by as many 10's as necessary until we get a whole

number.
Remember to multiply the dividend by the same number of 10's.

To multiply by 10 it is easier to just "shift the decimal":

Example: Divide 6.4 by 0.4

Let us just shift the decimal point one space for both:
move 1
6.4/0.4 is the same as 64/4,
6.4 64
as we moved the decimal point of
0.4 4

move 1 both numbers.

Now we can calculate: 64 / 4 = 16

So the answer is: 6.4 / 0.4 = 16

Divide 96.2 ÷ 0.52

Solution

Step 1: 96.2 has one decimal place. 0.52 has two decimal places. So we
make 96.2 have two decimal places by putting a zero to the right of 2 to
make it 96.20.
Step 2:
4
Moving the decimal point to the right two places in both the numbers, it
becomes a whole number division.
Now, 96.2 ÷ 0.52 = 96.20 ÷ 0.52 = 9620 ÷ 52 = 185
Problem - 2
Divide 9.36 ÷ 0.65

Solution

Step 1:
0.65 has two decimal places. 9.36 has two decimal places.
Step 2:
Now, 9.36 ÷ 0.65 = 936 ÷ 65 = 14.4

MELC 14: A. Dividing decimal Up To 4 decimal places by 0.1, 0.01,

0.001

Discussion/Illustrative Examples

Dividing by 0.1 is the same as multiplying by 10. This is because there are 10
tenths in a whole.

Dividing by 0.01 is the same as multiplying by 100. This is because 0.01 is one
hundredth and there are a hundred hundredths in a whole.

Dividing by 0.001 is the same as multiplying by 1000. This is because 0.001 is

one thousandth and there are a thousand thousandths in a whole.

Examples

19.21 ÷ 0.1 = 19.21 × 10 = 192.1

7190 ÷ 0.01 = 7190 × 100 = 719000

31244 ÷ 0.001 = 31244 x 1000 = 31244000

Notice that numbers get bigger when you divide them by 0.1, 0.01 or 0.001

Start with dividing a one-place decimal into another one-place decimal:

0.2/0.5

It means

____ ____ ____

0.5 )0.2 5. )20. 5 )20

5
We cannot have a divisor that is not a whole number, so we must change 0.5
into a whole number. To do this, we have to multiply by 10. This is because 0.5
is in the tenths place. We have to do this for both the divisor and the dividend
to balance them.
Or

0.2 x 10 2
------------- = -----
0.5 x 10 5

So, we have ____

5 )2.0

We need to show where the decimal point is in the dividend. The next
thing we need to do is to fix the decimal point of the answer. What you do is
just to move another decimal point straight up from the position in the
dividend.
___.___
5 ) 2.0

So, now you do normal division. Does 5 go into 2? No, so you can
either leave it blank or put a zero there to remind yourself there's nothing there
(and it will ensure that you keep your decimal point in the right place). Does 5
go into 20? Yes, so we put a 4 above zero. Our final answer is .4.

Now let's go through a more complicated problem:

______
0.14 )0.448

As above, we check out the divisor. The divisor is 0.14, which is 14 hundredths.
So we have to multiply by 100.

0.448 x 100 44.8

------------------- = ----------
0.14 x 100 14

The first thing we do is take care of the decimal point of the divisor (multiply by
100). So, we move the decimal of the dividend over two places.
Now we have
______
14 )44.8

6
Position the decimal point,

_3.2_
14 )44.8
-42
28
-28
x

Once you have positioned the decimal point, divide the numbers as
usual. You should have no problem, because it is the same as the division of a
big number, 448, divided by a smaller number, 14. The only difference is that in
your answer, you have to remember the position of the decimal point.

B. Dividing decimal up to 2 decimal places by 10, 100, and 1 000 mentally

The shortcut for division by 10, 100 and 1000 (powers of ten) is similar. Can you
guess it? Move the
decimal point to the ( left / right ) for as many places (steps) as there are
_________________________ in the factor 10, 100, or 1000.

0 0 2 . 8 ÷ 100 = 0.028

Move the decimal point two steps to the left. You need to write zeros in
front of the number.

0 0 0 5 6. ÷ 104 = 0.0056

Move the decimal point four steps to the left. You need to write zeros in front
of the number

7
SHORTCUT METHOD

Why does this SHORTCUT work? O t h th

When 0.01 (a hundredth) is multiplied by ten, we get ten 0 . 0 1
hundredths, which is equal to one-tenth. Or, 10 × 0.01 = 0.1.
The entire number moved one “slot” to the left on the place value O t h th
chart. This looks like moving the decimal point in the number to the
right. 0 . 1

A hundred times two-tenths is like multiplying each tenth by T O t h th

10, and by 10 again. Ten times two-tenths gives us two, and 0 0 . 2
ten times that gives us 20.
Again, it is like moving the number over two “slots” to the left
in the place value chart or moving a decimal point in 0.2, two T O t h th
steps to the right. 2 0 .

When 3.915 is multiplied by 100, we get 391.5. Each part of H T O t h th

the number (3, 9 tenths, 1 hundredth, 5 thousandths) is 3 . 9 1 5
multiplied by 100, so each one of those moves two “slots” in the
place value chart. This is identical to thinking that the decimal
point moves two steps to the right. H T O t h th
3 9 1 . 5

A similar shortcut for division works because the division is

the opposite operation of multiplication—it “undoes” multiplication. If we
move the decimal point to the right when multiplying by 10, 100, 1000, and so on,
then it is quite natural that the rule for division would work the “opposite” way.
