LAB Report

The document discusses the differences between local area networks (LANs), metropolitan area networks (MANs), and wide area networks (WANs). LANs connect devices within a small area like a building, while MANs connect multiple LANs within a city. WANs connect LANs and MANs across large geographic areas like countries.

1.1:- A network design (structure) of LAN, MAN & WAN

Local Area Network (LAN): LAN stands for Local Area Network. It refers to a
computer network that connects devices within a small geographic area, such
as an office, building, or campus. The devices that are connected to a LAN can
include computers, printers, servers, routers, and other peripherals. LANs can
be set up using various technologies, such as Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Token Ring.
They typically provide high-speed connectivity and allow for the sharing of
resources such as files, applications, and data storage. In contrast to WAN (Wide
Area Network), which connects devices across larger geographic areas such as
cities, states or even countries, LANs are limited in scope and are designed to
serve a smaller group of users in a more localized setting.

Metropolitan Area Network(MAN): MAN stands for Metropolitan Area

Network. It is a type of computer network that covers a larger geographic area
than a LAN but smaller than a WAN. A MAN typically covers a metropolitan area,
such as a city or town, and connects various LANs together. It can be used to
connect multiple buildings, such as different offices of a company or different
campuses of a university, within a city or town. MANs can be set up using various
technologies, such as fiber-optic cables, microwave links, or leased lines. They
provide higher bandwidth than LANs and can support a larger number of users
and devices. MANs are used to provide high-speed connectivity and data
transfer between different locations within a metropolitan area. They are
commonly used by businesses, universities, hospitals, and government agencies
to facilitate communication and data exchange between different branches or
departments.

Wide Area Network (WAN): WAN stands for Wide Area Network. It is a type of
computer network that spans a large geographic area, such as a state, country,
or even multiple countries. WANs are used to connect LANs or MANs that are
located in different geographic locations, allowing users and devices to
communicate with each other over long distances. WANs can be established
using various technologies, such as leased lines, satellite links, or the internet.
One of the primary benefits of WANs is their ability to provide high-speed
connectivity over large distances. They allow for the transfer of data, voice, and
video across different locations, making it possible for businesses, organizations,
and individuals to communicate and collaborate even if they are located in
different parts of the world. WANs are used by a wide range of organizations,
including corporations, government agencies, universities, and researchi
institutions, to share information, resources, and applications across different
locations.
