Problem Statement
Migration as defined by Oxford Languages is “movement from one part of something to another.”. For humans there
are many different types of migrations. There is internal migration which involves people moving inside a state,
country, or continent, external migration which is when people move to a different state, country, or continent,
emigration is people leaving one country for another, immigration is people moving into a
new country, and return migration is when people go back to the country they were from.
There are many reasons why people migrate such as food shortages, lack of jobs, or war, a
better climate, more jobs, or a growing economy. In 2019 alone, there were 272 million
migrants internationally. 52% of which were male and 48% were female. 164 million of the
270 million were migrant workers. Furthermore, the number of people who were forced to
migrate due to reasons like war was 79.5 million towards the end of 2019. Despite a large
fraction of the world being immigrants there are many problems they face. Some of the
bigger problems include language barriers, housing, and healthcare. There are over 7,099
languages worldwide each with their own complex set of rules, vocabulary, and slang so it
is no wonder that some migrants face problems
communicating effectively. Research done by the CATO Institute shows that from
2000 to 2010 around 10.33% to 9.02% percent of immigrants in the USA could not
speak English, that is an upwards of 106,389 people. Immigrants can face serious
problems finding safe affordable housing. On average, in the USA, immigrants earn
11.5% less than natives, which makes it difficult for them to afford the same quality
of housing as natives. Immigrants also face may problems when it comes to
healthcare, for example in the USA 62% of noncitizens are uninsured.
UAE has a total population 9.99 million people 8.84 million of which are
immigrants/expats (88.52%) a majority of being from India, Bangladesh, and
Pakistan. The main problems these immigrants must face is bad working conditions, poor housing, and expensive
healthcare. In the UAE migrant workers, specifically laborers, face harsh working conditions from the hot climate and
at times their pay gets delayed for months at a time. Living conditions can be strenuous as well as 70% of migrants are
low paid workers making it hard for them to afford housing or healthcare.
 A survey was sent to people who immigrated to the school and the results showed
the following. Firstly, most of the responders moved here from 2010 or after.
Secondly, the three main problems associated with moving to the UAE were housing,
transportation, and understanding the culture/language. When asked to elaborate on
the problems the responders said that the property owners, they had rented the
house for, were difficult to work with. That they had to live near metro stations due to
a taxi being too expensive, and that they didn’t know Arabic or English when they
came making it hard to do anything.
The problem is linked to this unit’s global context of identities and relationships because people of many different
identities migrate for a plethora of reasons and then form a relationship with not only the country but also its people.
In turn allowing those people to forma relationship with someone with a different identity than them.
Product Analysis

Product 1: Website

Aesthetics  The website has pictures of the UAE logo and colours related to the UAE to show the reader
that it’s about UAE.
 The title and regular text is large and made of a very clear font, which makes it easy to read
the website. This is especially important for the title as it makes it easier to understand what
the website is about just from a glance.
 The golden, white, and black design makes it easy on the eyes and simplistic but also
conveys a sense of importance and regality.
 Simple yet effective top down column layout that helps people understand what the
website is about and how they can apply.
 Images are used sparsely but effectively as you can tell instantly the type of website it is
from them.
Cost  According to MaxFizz Technologies the cost of a static 1 page static website (which this one
is as it is only 1 page and has a fixed display that showes the same thing for every user) can
be around 5,000 in india, where most websites are created. Turning that to dirhams, that is
around 250 AED.
 There could be further costs such as monthly payments for the websites servers,
programmers to keep the website running smoothly and doing maitneance, and staff for
 customer support.
Customer  Someone who is looking to migrate to the UAE and want to get the VISA. This can be seen
from not only the title but also the domain name being the official UAE website.
Environment  As the website was made and is hosted entirley online it has no direct impact on the
environment.
 Indirectly though there are a few environmental impacts. The computers it was made on
would have used natural resources such as metal and copper during their produciton, and
the factories they were made in would release carbon emmisions. These same computers in
50 years time may get thrown out and not recycled; the plastic in them would take a very
long time to degrade harming the environment in the process. Furthermore, the website
leads to people getting visa’s which would use plastic and paper to be made.
Safety  The closed lock icon to the left of the link signifies that the connection is secure menaing
that the information sent or gotten through the site is private.
 The computer on the other end could still take the data given in.
Size  The website is best viewed on 1920 x 1080 as all the options are visible.
Function  As the internet has become the go to information center in the world this website has been
made to provide information. Specifically, it has been made to provide information about
acquiring a residence visa in the UAE.
Material  This website was most likely made using Java, HTML, and CSS as those are the most popular
and powerful coding languages for websites.

Aesthetics  The websites main color scheme is white and red with other colors such as blue and
green for accents. White is used to act as a base color since the text and images pop
out more on it. The red is the main color of the RTA and makes the reader think of
energy and power which creates a subconcious link to transport. The other colors
such as blue and green are also often used in transportation based companies and
brands as they both signify reliablity, something everyone wants in their transport,
and eco friendlyness, a growing conern over our current transport methods,
 respectively.
 The text color contrasts against the to make it easier to see the text from a distance
but isn’t a stark enough contrast to hurt the eyes of a viewer.
 The website has some moving elements like enlarging pictures when you hover over
them which help keep the viewer engaged.
 The website has basic descriptions writen with the option to learn more with the click
of a button. This helps in not overloading the viewer with information and lettign
them go at their own pace. This also helps the website feel less clustered.
 The logo of the abu dahbi culture group is at the top to let the viewer quickly know
the general idea of the website.

more about the country they live in.

Design Brief:
I intend to make a simple multipage static website that will contain information regarding the UAE’s transportation. It
will be directed towards adult immigrants that have newly moved to the UAE to live. I have chosen this topic and
target market as my research indicates that transport was one of the main issues new immigrants faced. Furthermore,
it was an issue that I felt was very under looked especially regarding someone who had just recently moved to the
UAE. Transportation is a key element of life that many overlook, its needed to anything in modern times as traveling
long distances becomes and everyday part of life. A new migrant most of the time will not have a license or a car and
will therefore have to rely on public transport to get them to important places such as their home, workplace,
interview, restaurant, hospital, etc. But even then, public transport will still have problems like expenses, not being
able to go everywhere, and delays. Therefore, it’s important to have a place where new immigrants can come and find
some basic information in what kind of public transportation to use, when, and why.
The analysis of the 2 similar products, plus the research done, displayed a few key elements that websites all use and
are imperative to creating a good website. Firstly, there needs to be a consistent visual identity in terms of what colors
are used, the kind of designs, the logo, etc. From the research red has been selected as the main color as it represents
power and energy while also serving as the main color for the RTA, the main authority for transport in the UAE. White
will be used as a base color because the analysis showed that most websites used it due to its ease on the eyes and
ability to make most colored text and images stand out on it. Next the website needs to be easy to navigate, and the
analysis shows that a common way of doing this is to have a navigation bar displaying all the pages of the website. The
research has also shown a way to have images link to other places on the website which would make it easier to
traverse as images tend to stand out a lot, and another part of the research showed that there was a way to make
these images enlarge when hovered over with a cursor which could help draw more attention to them. These last few
points also help with another important part of a good website, keeping it easy to skim. They make it so that not all the
information is put onto one page in a giant block of text which keeps the site from being a chore to read. The rest of
the research helped find out what could be written within the site. For example: the research showed that the UAE
planning to make transportation affordable, safe, and ecofriendly. UAE’s public transport was used over 340 million
times in 2020. The average family of four (two adults, two children) spend 12,000 AED monthly and the median wage
in the UAE is 36,000. The downtown Dubai area and recreational places like beaches and mosques are visited most
often in the UAE.
In conclusion, a website created using HTML with elements of JavaScript, CSS, and Bootstrap needs to be created that
can inform new immigrants to the UAE about its transportation, laws, system, and most effective options. This site
should have a distinct yet understandable look, be easy to navigate, and easy to read through. The theme promotes
the global context identities and relationships with a focus on happiness and adjusting to a new country and the
lifestyle.
