Now, in March, 1993, the total number of trainees taken in by AOTS has reached approximately 55,000, from 150 different countries. ‘The biggest problem trainees face when they come to Japan to live and train is the language barrier. Trainees who do not understand Japanese do not become used to living in Japan and have difficulty in getting to know the country. Nor can they expect to get the best from their in-plant practical training, their ultimate reason for coming here. Many years of experience of AOTS have demonstrated that trainees’ success in their practical (ng is very often directly proportional to their Japanese-language ability. For this reason, we place great importance on language training even for trainees coming to Japan for relatively short periods. AOTS provides Japanese training as part of its General Orientation program, which trainees take before going to their host companies for practical training. ‘The main General Orientation Course lasts six weeks and includes 100 hours of Japanese lessons. It is no easy task to achieve good really nowhere near long enough for learning a new results in this short 100-hour period, which language. Naturally, this requires comprehensive, coordinated research and development of teaching methods, curricula and course materials, and Nihongo no Kiso series of AOTS represents the culmination of this painstaking process of development over many years. Shin Nihongo no Kiso Il, the sequel to Shin Nihongo no Kiso I (published November 1989) is a revised version of the previous edition, Nihongo no Kiso Il. Although the previous edition was, extremely well received for over ten years, we felt that a revision was due, and we have extensively improved it by updating its vocabulary, reorganizing and adding to some of its units, and rewriting it to help students make a smoother transition from Shin Nihongo no Kiso I, We apologize for the long delay in publishing the revised edition —this was due to the extensive testing and reworking of the material carried out in the classrooms of AOTS and other organizations. With the support and guidance of all concerned, we intend to continue developing and improving superior Japanese teaching materials, March 1993 ‘The Association for Overseas Technical ScholarshipNOTES ON THE REVISED EDITION Nihongo No Kiso I was published nearly ten years after Nihongo no Kiso I, and this led to some Inconsisteney between the two volume: To harmonize their contents and reflect our most up-to-date ‘caching approaches, we embarked in 1985 on a comprehensive revision of both volumes. In carrying ul this revision, we took the following steps: First, we revised the text contents by re-examining and incorporating the most basic, frequently- used sentence patterns, vocabulary and expressions. We also restructured the text comprehensively, including sentence patterns, example sentences, conversations and exercises. 2. We then addled a new set of exercises (Drills C) designed to improve students? practical conversation ability, while retaining effective features of Nihongo no Kiso such as drilling sentence patterns and vocabulary through the repetition of sentence pattern exercises. 3. With the help of trainees and their host companies and factories, we investigated trainees? linguistic behaviour from their arrival in Japan until their return home. We then used the results of this survey to select typical situations in which trainees use Japanese, and incorporated these in the textbook’s “Conversation” patterns. These ‘‘Conversations"” have been carefully written to provide examples of concise but highly-practical and natural Japanese. 4, We tried to make the books easier to use for both students and teachers by adding a review section every few lessons, as well as a summary of grammatical points and lists of related vocabulary. 5. We included a considerable amount of listening practice in the Practice Problems, as we believe it important to develop students’ listening comprehension at the elementary stage. Short reading Passages with questions are also provided as an aid to better r sading comprehension, Shin Nihongo no Kiso I! is an upper-level elementary Japanese textbook prepared with the above considerations in mind. It designed for a total of about one hundred hours’ study, and has been completed after extensive correction and revision during two years of actual classroom use. Nevertheless, the editors are still not confident of having achieved perfection, Your criticisms and comments will be most welcome and will help us to improve future editions, EXPLANATORY NOTES 1. Structure ‘The basic leat translation into various languages, and a box set of cassette tapes/CDs. The main text is avail- able in two versions—Romanized and Kanji-kana. The version you choose depends on your Jeaming needs. II Content and Method of Use 1. Main Text 1) Lessons Shin Nihongo no Kiso I has 25 lessons. As they continue on from the last lesson in Shin Nihongo no Kiso I(Lesson 25), they are numbered 26 to 50, Bach lesson is made up of the following: @Sentence patterns ‘These are the basic grammatical structures you will study in the lesson. They are given in the order they appear in the rest of the lesson. @Example sentences ‘The basic sentence patterns are presented in the form of @ mini question and answer dialogue, As many as possible of the adverbs and conjunctions dealt with in the lesson are also included in the dialogue. @Conversation ‘The conversations cover the life of trainees after they complete their six~ Orientation Course; that is to say, attending their Japanese host companies for practi- cal training, becoming accustomed to the life in Japan and getting to know Japanese people better, successfully completely their training and finally leaving Japan. Each conversation is packed with frequently used greetings and other everyday expressions related to the points of each lesson. They should be practiced until the situation and conversational interchange are well understood and can be confidently reproduced. If time allows, the learner should develop his/her conversational ability by spinning out these conversations with the help of audio-visual aids and the “Related vocabulary” jek General found in the translation,@ Drills The drills are divided into three levels—A, B, and C. Drill A is arranged for easy understanding of the grammatical structure and is laid out so as to aid visual memory. Ithelps the learner to establish an understanding of the bas © sentence pattern through ferent forms and conjunctions. Drill B uses various drill patterns to strengthen the learner's grasp of the basic sentence forms. Numbers with a OF sign indicate drills that use illustrations. Drill C is a short conversational-style drill intended for use after the learner has mastered the basic sentence patterns through working through Drills A and B. It is designed to show how the sentence patterns function in actual situations as well as to enhance the learner's conversational abilities, These drills should not simply be read aloud as written or merely repeated, It is desirable that they be practiced in a variety of ways, including using substitutions suitable to the learner's level. © Exercises Word substitution, and gives practice in the use of ‘There are two types of exercises—listening (§)) and grammar. The listening exercises on the cassette tapes/CDs are further divided into question and answer exercises, and questions about the key poi S of the conversations. The listening exercises are de- signed to strengthen the learner's aural ability, while the grammar exercises check comprehension of vocabulary and the grammar points of the lesson studied. The read- ing comprehension exercises mostly require the learmer to give a true/false response after reading a short passage made up of previously studied words and sentence pat- terns. 2) Review This is provided to enable the learner to go over the essential points of each lesson. 3) Summary A useful reference material at the end of the main text, it provides illustrative example usages of all the grammati al structures, parts of speech, ete., covered in the lessons. It consists of six sections: Particles, How to Use the Forms, Various Usages of Verbs and Adjectives, Intransitive and Transitive Verbs, Adverbs and Adverbial Expressions, and Various Conjunetions, 4) Index ‘This lists every word and expression introduced in the main text, with the number of the lesson or section where it first appears. 2. Translation ‘The translation is divided into three parts. 1) Part 1: Essential Vocabulary This lists and gives the translation of the words introduced in each lesson. 2) Part Il: Related Vocabulary In 12 sections, this part contains useful but not absolutely essential vocabulary 3) Part III: Translation This is the English translation of the following part tems, example sentences, conversations and the summary at the end of the book. the main text: the sentence pat- 3. Notes on Romanization cme 41) In general, the Hepburn system of romanization has been used. TO USERS OF THIS TEXTBOOK 1, Learn each word carefully and practise the sentence patterns by repeating them. ‘The Supplementary Text introduces the new words for each lesson. First learn these words well, then work out the precise meanings of the sentence patterns, then repeat these until you have thoroughly mastered the patterns. Be sure to speak out loud, especially when practising Drills A and B. 2. Practise the conversation drills thoroughly. Sentence-pattern practice is followed by conversation practice. The conversations illustrate various situations in daily life, Start by practising Drills C to get accustomed to the patterns, then study the conversations to pick up words and phrases useful when you meet similar situations. 3. Listen to the cassette tape/CD repeatedly. To acquite correct pronunciation and delivery, we suggest that you listen to the tape/CD and speak aloud when practising both sentence patterns and conversations, Listening to the tapes/CD repeatedly is also an extremely effective way of getting used to the sound and speed of spoken Japanese and developing your listening ability. 4, Always review what you have learnt. To make sure you remember what you have learnt, be sure to review it later the same day. Finally, try the practice problems to check what you have learnt and test your listening ability. 5. Use what you have learnt. Don’t limit your learning to the classroom. Try talking to your friends and acau: tances (Japanese and non-Japanese) using the Japanese you have learnt. Succeeding in making yourself understood will give you a great incentive to study more. If you follow the above suggestions and complete this textbook, you will expand the range of basic vocabulary and expressions you need for everyday situations and build a solid foundation introductory Japanese.
