Definition Direct Speech
Direct speech is a sentence that is said directly by someone
without change the sentence.

Things that must be considered In direct sentences, which is:


a. Reporting Verb (yang melaporkan) and Reported Words
(yang dilaporkan) separated by a comma ( , )
b. In a direct speech written in quotation mark (”…..”)
c . Reporting Verb is not necessarily in the beginning of a
sentence, but it can be at the end of a sentence.
Definition Indirect Speech
Indirect speech is the reporting of what someone else said
in your own words but without changing the meaning of
what was said.

Things that must be considered In direct sentences, which


is:
1). Between reporting Verb and Reported Words is
connected by conjunction (kata penghubung)
2). In a indirect speech is not written in quotation mark (”…..”)
Purpose
• Direct speech: are use to give an order or
make a request to someone.

•Indirect speech: are used to convey or


report back that someone has said without
quatation mark.
Characteristic direct - indirect:
1. Use capital letters at the beginning of direct
speech.
2. In direct speech, punctuation marks, such as
question marks, periods, and exclamation points,
are enclosed in quotation marks.
3. In indirect speech, the author will share the main
points of what someone said, without fully
explaining what he said.
4. In indirect speech, no speech punctuation marks,
such as quotation marks.
Rules how to change direct to indirect speech
1.1 . While changing direct speech
into indirect speech, remove
inverted commas and use
“that” instead of commas.

The first person pronoun is changed based on: the
subject of reporting speech.
The second person pronoun is changed based on:
the object of reporting speech.
The Third-person pronoun remains unchanged in
indirect speech.

1. Jono says, “l’m hungry now”
-> Jono said that he was hungry then.

Direct —> Indirect (statement)
A statement sentence using the introduction.
When the speaker reports again what others are talking
about, then the noun in the sentence must change.

Direct Indirect

Anna says to Hani, “I am Late” Ana says to Hani that she is late.

I said, “I will leave the country.” I said I would leave the country.
Direct - Indirect (Question)
Yes/no question (If/whether + S + P)
example:
1. “Are you okay?” Mina asked Fia.
-> Mina asked Fia if Fia was okay.

2. Ronal says to Ani, “Will you eat rice?”


-> Ronal says to Ani whether she will eat rice.

3. Tiara asked me, “Can you help me?”


-> Tiara asked me if I could help her.
Direct - Indirect (WH-Question)
WH Question (WH Words + S + P)
example:
WH question: 5W + 1H
(what, who, where, when, why + how)
1. Dila said to Jack, “What are you doing?”
-> Dila said to Jack what he was doing.

2. The boy asked me, “Where do you come from?”


-> The boy asked me where I came from.
Command and prohibition
Command : To infinitive
Prohibition: Not + to infinitive
1. My teacher said, “Close the door!”
—> My teacher said to close the door.
2. Siska asked me, “Don’t cheated on me!”
-> Siska asked me not to cheated on me.
3. My mom told me, “Don’t be noisy!”
-> My mom told me not to be noisy.
Conclusion
In conclusion, direct and indirect are
sentences in which expressions are used
to convey what others say without
changing the meaning of the sentence.
