Question

The Nether Hampden Tennis Club

The Nether Hampden Tennis Club is an unincorporated association of about 60
members who play tennis throughout the summer months on two tennis courts
owned by the local village Parish Council. The Council currently charges a rent of
£3,000pa for the use of the courts, and for this sum the Council takes responsibility
for the upkeep of the court to playable standards. The Club however have built (with
the permission of the Council) a small wooden clubhouse alongside the tennis
courts, and the Club is responsible for all associated expenses.

Under a written constitution agreed by the members in 19X7, the Tennis Club is run
by a Committee of 5 members, including:

• a Chairperson (who presides over all official meetings)

• a Secretary (responsible for dealing with correspondence and for organising
competitive tennis matches with other local clubs)
• a Treasurer (who looks after all finances)
• an Events Organiser (responsible for organising various fundraising events
including a Summer Garden Party held each year just before Wimbledon
Fortnight – the whole village usually attends)
• a Diary Organiser (responsible for allocating court time to members using a
booking system)

The members pay a subscription of £100 per year to belong to the Club. There are
reduced rates for senior citizens and junior players. Subscription rates have not
changed since 20X1. Members are expected to attend fundraising events, participate
in team matches (when selected) and generally support the Club’s activities.

It is January 20X5 and the Annual General Meeting of the Club is being held in the
Church Hall. The Treasurer presents the following Cash Account to the members:
