Merchant of Venice Chapter 2

Portia was a wealthy young woman who was unhappy because her deceased father's will prevented her from choosing her own husband, instead requiring suitors to choose correctly from three boxes. Her father devised this test in an attempt to help Portia find a suitable match even after his death, though previous suitors were deemed unsuitable for various reasons like excessive drinking or lack of personality. Portia hoped the next suitor, Bassanio, would be brave, interesting and court her successfully.
