Diego Velázquez put Hernán Cortés in command of an expedition to discover Yucatán in 1518. Cortés left Cuba with ships and arrived in Mexico, making alliances with local groups. In 1520, smallpox killed the Aztec emperor Cuitlahuac and he was replaced by Cuauhtemoc. In August 1521, after a long siege, Cortés and his forces defeated the Aztec empire and captured Tenochtitlán, marking the fall of the Aztec empire and the beginning of Spanish rule in Mexico.
