The Background of the Study is part of the introductory section of a


research proposal or of a final research report.

• It is a concise description of the nature of the research problem,


why the problem exists, or what makes the topic interesting.
• It describes the setting of the research, a historical perspective
of the problem.
• It gives a brief explanation of what motivated the researcher to
do a study on the idea.
• It only introduces the reader to the main topic and is not intended
to be the focus of the paper.

Importance of Background of the Study


The Background of the Study gives the reader of your research paper
an insight into the research problem. Moreover, it gives the reader the
impression that the researcher has basic understanding of key issues and
concepts of the research problem being investigated and, therefore,
promotes reader’s confidence in the overall quality of the study’s results and
analysis.
