People VS Haloc Case Digest

Jessie Haloc is charged with attempted murder for attacking Ambrozio Dela Cruz and his five sons with a bolo. Haloc's sister testified that in the days before the incident, Haloc had been drinking heavily and was unable to sleep due to worries about his child's upcoming marriage. Medical records show Haloc was treated for mental illness in 2003 and 2008. However, the court rejected an insanity defense because Haloc recognized his sister at the scene and surrendered the bolo to her, showing he was not completely deprived of reason or intelligence. The Supreme Court upheld the murder conviction, finding no exempting circumstances since Haloc's mental condition did not diminish his ability to understand the consequences of his actions.
