One of the most important parts of a story is the setting.

Setting is
the time and place an author chooses for their literary work. Setting can also
include physical landscape, climate, weather that serve as a backdrop for the
action. The best stories use the setting to properly develop the plot. Being able to
analyze the setting is important in understanding the entirety of the story. This is
where setting analysis comes to play.
As a student, I have read a few stories. Different stories have
different setting. I noticed that a story can have more than one setting. And when
I read the stories, I often recognize the setting as soon as the story starts. For
example, the story of Hansel and Gretel is set in the forest and the candy house.
And also the story Little Red Riding Hood is set in the village, woods and
Grandmother’s house.
From reading these stories, I realized that the setting is mostly
responsible for placing the initial mood of the story. For example, if the setting is
in a fog filled dark forest, it will give a sense of fear or uneasiness. That made me
think that being able to analyze the setting, you would be able to understand and
enjoy the story. Another example is the story Beauty and the Beast. Knowing how
to analyze a setting makes everything in a story to make much more sense.
Now that I learned how to do setting analysis, I can easily recognize a
story’s setting. I can recognize where and even when a story is set. With this
knowledge, I can even improve my story writing even if I don’t enjoy writing
stories. Being able to analyze a setting means that I won’t be confused especially
with what genre the story is. I can apply this skill especially because I probably will
be reading more stories in my time in school.
